25. TestingBattery Temperature Sensor
Use the following information to check the temperature sensor operation:
(a)
Set up a hot oil bath at 130°F and obtain an ohmmeter.

(b)
Remove the temperature sensor unit from the battery and disconnect the wire at the fuse holder.

(c)
Connect the probes of the ohmmeter to the temperature sensor; there should be no reading.

(d)
Submerge the temperature sensor into the hot oil and observe the ohmmeter; a reading should be indicated. The sensor should reset when removed from the hot oil, after being allowed to cool down to 110°F.

(e)
With test completed, reinstall the temperature sensor to the battery and connect the fuse holder. Ensure that the fuse is installed and in good condition.

26. Adjustment of Electrolyte Level
WARNING: WEAR PROPER PROTECTIVEGEAR WHEN PERFORMING BATTERY MAINTENANCE. ELECTROLYTE (POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE) IS VERY CAUSTIC AND MAY CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR AIRCRAFT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. IF INJURED, NEUTRALIZE WITH 3% BORIC ACID SOLUTION IN WATER, AND SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
The liquid level in battery varies with the state of charge. It must be visible above baffle top when the battery is fully charged.
(a)
Adjust level after battery is fully charged and is at rest for 2 to 4 hours disconnected from any circuit.

(b)
Removevent plug from each cell. one at a time, to adjust electrolytelevel.

(c)
Use a transparent tube open at both ends, about six inches long, and 0.025 inch in diameter. Insert it perpendicular to baffles into filler well until end rests lightly on cell baffle. Then place index finger over top end of tube and withdraw.

(d)
Tube liquid level must be between 0.375-0.5inch. If liquid level is above 0.5 inch, remove excesswitha syringe or squeeze bottle. If liquid level is below 0.375 inch, add only distilled water.

(e)
Recharge battery at 4 amps for 1 hour after adding distilled waterto prevent damage from freezing during cold weather. Remove battery from aircraft for charging.

27.Battery Inspection
(a) InspectElcon connector for evidence of arcing, mechanicalwear, corrosion, cracks, bent terminals, and general physical condition. Look for signs of overheating, especiallyaround the positiveand negative connectorpins. Defective connectorscan cause dangerous overheating due to the high current capabilities of the nicad battery. Using an ohmmeter set on highest scale, verify the resistance of the insulation is infinite between the connector pins.
NOTE: Refer to Battery Disconnect and Receptacle Inspectionparagraphin this chapter for complete inspection procedure.

28. Battery Disconnect and Receptacle Inspection
The purpose of this inspection is to detect worn or weakened battery quick disconnectsthereby reducingthe possibility of the existence of a potentially hazardous condition.
(a)
Disengage the battery disconnect fromthe mating receptacle and inspect for the following: (1.) Corrosion or pitting of the helix. (2.) Excessive free play in the handwheel-worm assembly. (3.) Evidence of arcing or bum marks on the helix.

(b)
Insertthe 0.385 inch diameter end of the inspection gauge (Elcon Inspection GaugeNo. 029) intoeach helix to a depth of 0.437 inches. The fit shall be snug with a force to remove greater thanone pound. This is to test the resiliency of the helix to an oversized pin.

(c)
Insertthe 0.370 inch diameter end of the inspection gauge into each helix to a depth of 0.437 inches. The fit shall be snug with a nominal force to remove of one pound. This will ensure proper contact to a worn or undersized contact pin.

(d)
With the mating disconnectremoved, inspectthe battery receptacle as follows:
(1.) Inspect the contact pins for evidence of corrosion or pitting.
(2.) Inspect the contact pins for evidence of arcing or burn marks.
