B. The engine supplies the airplane with propulsion, hydraulic power,
pneumatic power and electrical power.
C. You can get access to the engine components for maintenance through the fan cowl panels, core cowl panels and thrust reversers. Some engine components can be serviced through access doors without the cowling open.
2. Engine (Fig. 1)
______
A. The engine is a two-spool, axial flow turbofan engine with high
compression ratio and high bypass ratio.
B. The engine incorporates two multi-stage turbine driven compressors. The
compressors have concentric shafting. The low pressure (N1) compressor
has five stages and is driven by a four stage low pressure turbine. The
high pressure (N2) compressor has eleven stages and is driven by a two
stage high pressure turbine. Refer to 72-00-00/001, Engine, for
description of engine and basic accessories.

C. The combustion section of the engine is a single annular type combustion chamber. Refer to 72-00-00/001, Engine, for description of engine and basic accessories.
D. The exhaust section of the power plant is described in 78-11-00/001 and 78-31-00/001.
3. Cowling (Fig. 2)
_______
A. The engine cowling and exhaust system are aligned together to make an aerodynamically smooth surface on the engine and supply a protective enclosure for engine mounted components.
B. The cowling includes the inlet cowl, right and left fan cowl panels, and right and left core cowl panels. The thrust reverser halves and the turbine exhaust sleeve are the nacelle. Refer to 71-11-00/001, Engine Cowling, 78-11-00/001, Turbine Exhaust and 78-31-00/001, Thrust Reverser System, for description of individual components.
4. Mounts (Fig. 3)
______
A. Each engine is attached to the airplane wing struts by the forward and aft engine mounts.

B. The engine mounts provide suspension of the engine and transmission of engine thrust loads. The engine mounts absorb vertical and side loads and permit axial and radial growth due to thermal expansion. Refer to 71-21-00/001, Engine Mounts, for description of the engine mounts.
5. Drains (Fig. 4)
______
A. The engine drain system collects and discharges drain fluids from the engine. The drain fluids are discharged through the lower bifurcation of the thrust reverser and the core cowl panels. Refer to 71-71-00/001, Engine Drains for description of engine drains.
