CAUTION:_______YOU MUST OBEY THE STARTER OPERATION LIMITS. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THE STARTER OPERATION LIMITS, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE STARTER.
1) Before you put the applicable FUEL CONTROL switch to the RUN position, make sure N1 turns in the forward direction (clockwise from the rear).

2) At the 20% N2 indication, put the applicable FUEL CONTROL switch to the RUN position. 3) Make sure the EICAS advisory messages, FUEL SPAR VLV 1, 2, 3, or 4 and ENG 1, 2, 3, or 4 FUEL VLV, do not show.
CAUTION: IF INSTANTANEOUS LIGHTUP OCCURS (LIGHT UP OCCURS IN 1 OR 2
_______ SECONDS AFTER YOU PUT THE FUEL CONTROL SWITCH TO THE RUN POSITION), IMMEDIATELY PUT THE FUEL CONTROL SWITCH TO THE CUTOFF POSITION. CONTINUE TO MOTOR THE ENGINE UNTIL THE EGT IS LESS THAN 100°C. YOU MUST FIND THE CAUSE OF THE INSTANTANEOUS LIGHTUP AND CORRECT IT BEFORE THE SUBSEQUENT START. IF YOU DO NOT CORRECT THE CAUSE, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.
(c) Look at the EICAS for the indications that follow as the engine lightup occurs and increases in speed to idle. 1) N1 and N2 increase (you must have an N1 rpm of
approximately 24% when N2 rpm is 65% during the start cycle).
CAUTION: IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT LIGHTUP IN 20 SECONDS OR LESS
_______ (35 SECONDS IF IT IS THE INITIAL START AFTER AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT OR FUEL SYSTEM MAINTENANCE) AFTER THE FUEL CONTROL SWITCH IS PUT TO THE RUN POSITION, IMMEDIATELY PUT THE FUEL CONTROL SWITCH TO THE CUTOFF POSITION. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, AN ENGINE GROUND FIRE OR A FLAME WHICH COMES OUT THE EXHAUST CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE FUEL FLOW IS NOT MORE THAN 295 KGS/HR
_______ BEFORE LIGHTUP OCCURS OR THE DUCT PRESSURE IS LESS THAN 30 PSI. IF ONE OF THESE CONDITIONS OCCURS, A HOT START CAN OCCUR AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
CAUTION: DO NOT CONTINUE TO START THE ENGINE IF THE EGT
_______ QUICKLY INCREASES MORE THAN 425°C. IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: IF ONE OF THE CONDITIONS FROM ABOVE OCCURS, PUT THE
_______ FUEL CONTROL SWITCH TO THE CUTOFF POSITION AND CONTINUE TO MOTOR THE ENGINE FOR 30 SECONDS TO REMOVE THE FUEL AND GAS FROM THE ENGINE. MAKE SURE YOU OBEY THE STARTER OPERATION LIMITS. WHEN THERE IS NO MORE FUEL OR GAS IN THE ENGINE AND THE ENGINE HAS STOPPED, YOU CAN TRY TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN WITH THE TWO IGNITERS.
2) Lightup (EGT increase) occurs in 20 seconds or less after the FUEL CONTROL switch is put to the RUN position.

3) Fuel flow is approximately 227 kgs/hr at lightup.
NOTE: It is possible that airplanes PRE-SB 747-31-2282
____ will have a fuel flow spike immediately after the FUEL CONTROL switch is moved to the RUN position during a manual start. This anomaly will not show after approximately 10-15 seconds.
Airplanes POST-SB 747-31-2282 (EICAS S/W P/N 685-2265-014 and higher) will not have any fuel flow spiking anomalies during a manual start. When the FUEL CONTROL switch is moved to the RUN position, the fuel flow indication will show idle fue l flow. If there is a rapid increase (spike) in the fuel flow with the new software, there is a failure in the fuel metering system.
NOTE: If you try a cold start, you must have a fuel flow
____ of approximately 295 kgs/hr at lightup.
4) Indication of the engine oil pressure.
CAUTION:_______DO NOT LET THE EGT INCREASE MORE THAN 535°C. IF THE EGT IS MORE THAN 535°C, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.
5) EGT is less than 535°C.
6) EICAS advisory message, HYD PRESS ENG (1, 2, 3, or 4), goes off as hydraulic pressure increases more than 1400 psi.
