NAVIGATION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________
General
_______
A. The navigation systems are those systems used to determine and display the attitude, altitude, and position of the airplane with respect to the earth's surface. The navigation systems fall into the following general catagories:
(1)
Those systems which sense and display flight environmental data.
(2)
Those systems which determine airplane attitude and direction.
(3)
Those systems which provide landing and taxiing aids.
(4)
Those systems which are self-contained and independent of ground-based equipment.
(5)
Those systems which are dependent upon and operate in conjunction with ground-based equipment.
(6)
Those system which compute airplane position.
B. The various navigation units are located in four main equipment centers throughout the airplane and are remotely controlled and displayed from the flight compartment. These equipment centers are:
(1)
Forward equipment center
(2)
Main equipment center
(3)
Forward center fuselage equipment center
(4)
Aft center fuselage equipment center
C. Receiving and/or transmitting antennas required by navigation systems are located externally on the airplane as shown in Fig. 1.
D. Navigation system information is displayed on the primary flight displays (PFD) and the navigation displays (ND). The PFD's and ND's are described in the integrated display system (Ref 31-61-00).
Pitot Static System (Ref 34-11-00)
___________________
A. The pitot-static system senses the dynamic (pitot) and ambient (static) air pressure external to the airplane and supplies these two pressures to the equipment and instruments for determining airplane altitude and motion.
Air Data System (Ref 34-12-00)
_______________
A. The air data system provides air data information to all airplane interfacing systems and equipment except for the elevator feel computer and the standby instruments. The air data computer outputs are on four electrically isolated ARINC 429 output data busses. All of the busses contain the same computed values of altitude, vertical speed, airspeed, mach number, and air temperature. These outputs are derived from dynamic (pitot) pressure, ambient (static) pressure, total air temperature, angle of attack, and barometric pressure setting.
