An output bus from the MCP provides the selected altitude value, glide slope capture, and the flight control computer (FCC) in command information to the crew alerting card.

 (b)
The selected altitude is set on the MCP using the ALT knob and is displayed on the MCP and on the pilots' PFD's.

 (c)
The MCP is located on the pilots' lightshield.

 E. Integrated Display System (IDS)
 (1)
Components of the IDS that interface with the altitude alert system are the:

 (a)
Electronic flight instrument system/engine indicating and crew alerting system (EFIS/EICAS) interface unit

 (b)
Primary flight display

 (c)
EICAS displays

 (d)
EICAS display select panel

 (2)
EFIS/EICAS interface unit (EIU)

 (a)
Three EIU's receive discrete outputs from the crew alerting card and an ARINC 429 bus output from the SCID #1 card. These signals are processed to generate altitude alert system displays on the PFD's and EICAS displays.

 (b)
The left, right and center EIU's are located in the main equipment center rack E2.

 (3)
Primary flight display (PFD)

 (a)
The PFD is a CRT which provides displays for several electronic systems. The displays on the PFD that apply to the altitude alert system are the baro-corrected altitude tape, the baro-corrected altitude readout box and numerics, the selected altitude readout, and the selected altitude bug.

 (b)
The altitude readout box centered on the altitude tape contains the current baro-corrected altitude value and points to that value on the tape. In approach mode, the readout box consists of triple-stroked, full-intensity white lines. In deviation mode, the readout box consists of yellow double-stroked lines. In capture, reset, or inhibit mode, the readout box consists of single-stroked, half-intensity white lines.

 (c)
The selected altitude readout is located above the altitude tape. A white box is displayed around the readout when in approach mode. The box is not displayed during other modes.

 (d)
The selected altitude is also displayed by a magenta bug that points to the selected altitude value on the altitude tape. If the selected altitude value is not in view on the altitude tape, half of the altitude bug disappears and the remaining half parks at the top or at the bottom of the tape indicating that the selected value is higher or lower than the actual altitude.

 (e)
The captain's PFD is located on the captain's instrument panel (P1). The first officer's PFD is located on the first officer's instrument panel (P3).

 (4)  EICAS displays
 (a)
The EICAS displays are CRT's that provide displays for several electronic systems. Caution messages are displayed on the main EICAS display. Status messages are displayed on the auxiliary EICAS display when selected.

 (b)
The EICAS messages that apply to the altitude alert system are:

 1)  >ALTITUDE ALERT - caution message displayed when in deviation mode
 2) ALT ALERT SYS - status message displayed when the altitude alert system or one of its inputs fails
 (c)  The main EICAS display is located on the pilots' center instrument panel (P2). The auxiliary EICAS display is located on the forward electronic control panel (P9).
 (5)  EICAS display select panel
 (a)
The STAT button on the EICAS display select panel is used to select the screen on the auxiliary EICAS display that contains the status messages.

 (b)
The EICAS display select panel is located on the pilots' lightshield.

 F. Parking Brake System
 (1)
The component of the parking brake system that interfaces with the altitude alert system is the parking brake lever.

 (2)
Parking brake lever

 (a)
The parking brake lever provides a ground discrete to the crew alerting card when not set. This discrete enables the flaps in landing range and landing gear down and locked condition to inhibit the altitude alert system.
