CAT II TRAINING FFS SESSION GUIDE
01 - SESSION OBJECTIVE
· To consolidate the CAT II CBT training with practical illustration of low visibility flying
conditions so that the crew reach the required level of proficiency for CAT II and low
visibility operations.
02 - TRAINING TOPICS
A. REVIEW
NIL
B. INTRODUCE
· CAT II and low visibility training
03 - SESSION PROFICIENCY CRITERIA
· The crew has reached a good level of proficiency so as to operate low visiblity and CAT II.
04 - SESSION GUIDE
The minimum specified on the syllabus are compliant with J.A.A requirements.
For all exercises, the instructor must adapt RVR and cloud base settings to the Airline operational
minimum when they are different. In this case they must be mentioned on the syllabus page, in the
appropriate box.
1 : - Ensure that the trainee does not waste time in setting-up prior to start
- An appropriate take-off alternate should be inserted in the SEC F/PLAN.
2 : - Brief the crew that visibility will be reduced to zero on the take-off run to illustrate the
effectiveness of the YAW-BAR.
(NOTE : YAW-BAR will appear only if the ILS/LOC is available for the same RWY
direction)
- Ask the PF to continue T/O for training purposes, using the YAW-BAR only.
- Freeze SIM just prior to V1, increase visibility to show aircraft on centerline, then
continue the take-off.
3 : - Ensure that the crew can give a concise CAT II approach briefing.
- Stress task sharing, weather minima, crew qualification, alternate planning, fuel
requirements, aircraft or airfield servicibility, SOP, flight deck lighting, etc...
- Check crew seating position
- LO or MED autobrake is recommended
- Check autoland limitations.

CAT II TRAINING FFS SESSION GUIDE (CONT’D)
04 - SESSION GUIDE (CONT’D)
4 : - The crew must check autoland function prior to approach (CAT 3 SINGLE, CAT 3
DUAL).
- The crew must acknowledge all FMA changes.
- The crew must call and acknowledge approach std. call-out.
- Check that Go Around ALT is properly set.
A. Freeze the approach at DH 150 and review visual segment [change RVR 550 m
(CAT 1) to RVR 300 m (CAT 2)].
- Ask crew to switch landing lights ON and OFF, to show the change in visual clues.
- Vary the flight deck lightening to illustrate the necessity of low intensity.
B. Freeze SIM at DH 100 ft and review visual segment at RVR 350 m and vert. vis.
100 ft (CAT 2 min).
- Release SIM and perform autoland.
- Observe FLARE mode latest at 30 ft RA.
- Observe autobrake "DECEL"
- Check autopilot roll-out mode.
NOTE : During landing roll when starting manual braking, disconnect autopilot at the
same time.
6 : Insert STBY horizon when ILS established but above 1000 ft AGL.
NOTE : There is NO ECAM warning and NO approach capability change on FMA, but
CAT 2 approach is NOT allowed (CAT 1 only).
8 : - Reduce visibility to zero and insert eng failure at 100 kt (before V1).
- Ensure that the PF is using YAW-BAR guidance during rejected take-off.
10 : A. Insert LOC transmitter failure before OM (or FAF) (restore).
NOTE : - AP’s and FD’s remain engaged in approach mode (G/S and LOC green)
- LOC index is removed
- LOC scale flashes ONLY if LOC transm. failure occurs when aircraft is
captured on the localizer.
CAUTION : NO RED LOC WARNING
B. Insert LOC transmitter failure for the second time at 200 ft RA.
