4. Procedure
_________ (Ref. Fig. 401/TASK 28-21-51-991-001, 402/TASK 28-21-51-991-004) Subtask 28-21-51-020-053 R A. Removal of the Fuel Pumps 21QA(26QA) and 25QA(22QA) CAUTION : DO NOT REMOVE :
_______
-
THE RETAINER PIN-AND-SPRING ASSEMBLY FROM THE FUEL PUMP
-
THE RETAINER BAULK ARM FROM THE FUEL PUMP CANISTER THE REMOVAL OF THESE PARTS CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
CAUTION : MAKE SURE THAT THE FUEL PUMP SLIDE-VALVE DOES NOT TURN WHEN YOU
_______ REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP. IF THE FUEL PUMP SLIDE-VALVE TURNS, IT CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
CAUTION : MAKE SURE THAT THE RETAINER BAULK ARM STAYS IN THE UNLOCKED
_______ (OPEN) POSITION. THIS WILL PREVENT ACCIDENTAL MOVEMENT OF THE SLIDE-VALVE WHICH CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
CAUTION : DO NOT EXTEND THE RETAINER PIN-AND-SPRING ASSEMBLY TO MORE THAN
_______ ITS LIMIT BECAUSE THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO IT. IF THE RETAINER PIN-AND -SPRING ASSEMBLY IS DAMAGED THE SLIDE-VALVE CAN MOVE AND CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANKS.
(1) Remove the bolts (3). R (2) Install the EXTRACTOR TOOL (558-1-05903-002) or the EXTRACTOR - FUEL
R PUMP (558-1-05903) on the applicable fuel pump as follows: CAUTION : YOU MUST USE THE TOOLING HOLES WHEN YOU INSTALL THE
_______ EXTRACTOR TOOL. THIS WILL PREVENT LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
(a)
Install the threaded rods (22) through the tooling holes (12) in the pump flange and fully into the threaded holes in the slide valve.
(b)
Turn the knobs (24) together in small equal increments until the threaded rods (22) touch the canister and resistance is felt.

(3) Continue to turn the knobs (24) until the pump and slide valve start to move apart from the canister.
NOTE : The initial movement down will break the seal effect between
____
the slide valve and the canister.
(4) As soon as the slide valve starts to move, pull down lightly on the handles (23) of the EXTRACTOR TOOL.
CAUTION : DO NOT USE TOO MUCH FORCE TO PULL THE FUEL PUMP AND THE
_______ SLIDE VALVE ON TO THE BAULK ARM. THIS WILL PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE BAULK ARM AND THE RETAINING PIN AND SPRING ASSEMBLY.
Continue to pull down lightly on the handles (23) of the EXTRACTOR TOOL until:
-
the stop pin on the slide valve is fully clear of its locating hole in the flange of the canister
-
the movement of the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve is stopped by the baulk-arm (13) on the retaining pin and spring assembly.
NOTE : The fuel inlet through the canister is closed when the slide
____
valve movement is completed.
(5)
Use the EXTRACTOR TOOL to turn the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve counterclockwise. Turn until the head of the retaining pin is clear of the slot in the fuel pump (2).
(6)
Remove the EXTRACTOR TOOL from the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve.
(7)
Put the container in position below the drain bolt (8).
(8)
Remove and discard the lockwire from the drain bolt (8).
(9)
Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (8) with the O-ring (9).
(10)
Drain a total of 0.5 l (0.1320 USgal) of fuel from the fuel pump (2) and the fuel pump canister into the container.
(11)
Monitor the fuel that drains from the fuel pump drain hole. If the fuel flow from the fuel pump drain hole is too much to let work continue, do this procedure:
R NOTE : This will make sure that the slide valve seal is correctly
____ R positioned.
R (a) Install the drain bolt (8) and the O-ring (9).

R R R (b) Use the EXTRACTOR TOOL to turn the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve clockwise. Align the stop pin in the slide valve flange, with the stop pin locating hole in the canister.
R R (c) Make sure that the slot in the flange of the fuel pump (2) engages with the retaining pin and spring assembly.
R R (d) Push the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve up and fully into the fuel pump canister.
R R (e) Repeat steps 2 thru 6 and remove the fuel pump (2) and slide valve from the canister again.
R R (f) Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (8) with the O-ring (9).
R (g) Drain all fuel from the fuel pump (2) into the container.
