EFB: 2007 Industry Review
Introduction
The Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) industry continues to grow and mature. EFB manufacturers offer systems for a
wide range of operations, including commercial air transport, corporate, and general aviation. This EFB industry
review provides an overview of EFB systems capabilities, capturing the state of the EFB industry as of March 2007.
This report is provided to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) but the information in this report is intended
to be of use to anyone interested in the EFB market. This review is an update of two previous reviews (see Appendix
A of Chandra, Yeh, Riley, and Mangold (2003) and Yeh and Chandra (2005)).
This review is divided into three sections. The first section contains a brief review of EFB research conducted by the
John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) over the past several years. This information
may be useful to those who are new to the topic, or for those who need a quick review of all the different resources
available.
The second section, the bulk of this report, contains two-page entries describing the offerings from each of several
providers and integrators. Many manufacturers now offer product lines with multiple hardware and software
solutions configured into various packages. In this report, a general picture of the product lines is provided rather
than details for specific EFB models. This review highlights aspects of the EFB interface (e.g., the display size, the
number and types of controls, and the available applications) rather than hardware aspects (e.g., memory, processor
speed). Information on FAA approvals received or in progress is also included. The entries for each system also
indicate whether it runs custom software (i.e., developed in-house) or could run a third party commercial-off-theshelf
(COTS) application. This information is a rough indicator of the level of integration across the EFB hardware
and various software applications.
The last section of this review contains a list of software providers. These applications can be installed on EFB
hardware that is purchased separately. Detailed information is not provided for the individual software applications.
A list of reference documents, including policy and research documents, is provided at the end of this document.
The Volpe Center research reports in the reference list are available at www.volpe.dot.gov/hf/aviation/efb. FAA
