organizational members to want to achieve the visions we also need managers to formulate
detailed plans, create efficient organizational structures, and oversee day to day operations.
Things that differentiate leaders from non-leaders ambition and energy, the desire to lead,
honesty and integrity, self confidence, intelligence, high self-monitoring, and job-relevant
knowledge.
There are many researches done about leadership and many theories are proposed about
leadership and leadership types. Since inspiration is one the important component of success in
almost every area of today’s world, it’s needed to focus on inspiring role of leaders.
Inspiration in Leadership
Leaders can be considered as individuals who inspire followers through words, ideas and
behaviours. When we consider big events, movements, revolutions that had big impact on
history: almost all of them were led by leaders that had ability to inspire crowds. Leaders like
Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., F. Kennedy are the leaders who had big influence among
crowds, and they caused big changes in the history. All of them had certain visions in their minds
and they made people believe their visions by using leadership abilities. Remember Martin
Luther King, Jr.’s speeches starting with the expression: “I have a dream”. The thing he did was
making people believe in his dream. He influenced people toward making his dream real, and
gained peoples trutst, support and goals achieved.
Martin Luther King, Jr, is only of these leaders, if we look back to history we can see many
leaders that could inspire crowds. Thing that differentiate these kinds of leaders from other
leaders is compare to other leaders they influenced people much more and effected all world and
history. Their visions were almost impossible but somehow they achieved their goals. We need to
achieve big goals and cope with the enormous life-threatening problems that our world is facing
today, these kinds of leaders are needed.
As mentioned before, our world needs leaders who can inspire people, and influence huge
crowds. Therefore it’s important to focus on leadership with inspirational approach. There are
two main theories related to topic, these are Charismatic Leadership, Transformational
Leadership. In the next captures these leadership types will be analyzed.
What is Charismatic Leadership
According to charismatic leadership theory, followers make attributions of heroic or
extraordinary leadership abilities when they observe certain behaviors. There have been number
of studies that have attempted to identify personal characteristics of charismatic leader, as a result
of these studies five such characteristics identified as basic behaviors of charismatic leaders that
differentiate them from non-charismatic ones.
Charismatic leaders first articulate a vision. The vision connects follower’s present willing to
future organization. They expect high performance and express confidence that followers can
attain them. These provides self-esteem and self-confidence. Thereafter, charismatic leaders set
an example for followers in order to imitate by their words, actions and behaviors. Finally,
charismatic leader makes self sacrifices and engages in conventional behavior to demonstrate
courage and convictions about the vision. That is a summary of the way that charismatic leader
follow in order to influence people and achieve their vision.
Since the vision is such a critical component of charismatic leadership, it’s better to clarify
exactly what we mean by the term vision. “A vision has clear and draws on traditions, and
connects to actions that people can take to realize change. Vision taps people’s emotions and
energy. Properly articulated, a vision creates the enthusiasm that people have for supporting
events and other leisure-time activities, bringing this energy and commitment to workplace.”
The key properties of a vision seem to be inspirational possibilities that are value-centered,
realizable, with superior imagery and articulation. Visions should be able to create possibilities
that are inspirational, unique, and offer a new order that can produce organizational distinction. A
vision is likely to fail if it doesn’t offer a view of the future that is clearly and demonstrably better
for organization and its members. Also, visions that have clear articulation and powerful imagery
are more easily grasped and accepted.
What are some examples of visions? Steve Jobs‘s vision before he found Apple can be an
example. While computers were used only by corporations, governments and universities Jobs
wanted to make computers small, easy to use that everyone can use it in their homes without any
