workshop that people were not constantly motivated because they did not know what was
going on, what decisions were made and, more importantly, why they were made. This
experience developed by talking to the other members of the group and most of all the really
critical ones. I noticed that people were getting less motivated while working on the manual,
because they were just doing something because they were supposed to do so (though it was
good for the real assignment given to us), instead of thinking themselves that it was the best
thing to do.
This contradiction in thinking, and the actions one is forced to take, is good on one hand
because you cannot always get your way but on the other hand really de-motivating. This
might work out for some of the group-members, which are most of the time the less critical
ones (although it is more than only being critical, this was the most important for the
distinction in this group), because they do not feel this contradiction, but there are also some
of them who do not like this (this enlarges the de-motivation). Different students in a group
with different kind of backgrounds (I think in this context their level of criticism is most
important) need all different kind of information to keep motivation.

The effect this has is that there comes an informal distinction between more and less critical
group-members. This again has the effect that the people who are critical get motivated by the
fact that they know what is going on and why they are doing what they are doing. Another
thing is that they also get motivated by the fact that they know there is a distinction made (this
is in fact just appreciation as well). As I am writing this I question myself whether this
distinction is a good thing in every situation. This is because the persons with the less
information might feel unappreciated by the fact that they get not all the information they
could get. But, as I experienced they are not too critical about what is going on anyway, so
they will probably not notice.
This is also the point where trust comes into it; there has to be a reliance on the fact that they
are only going to share this with the right persons. So, although it is probably really hard to
figure out who is what kind of person and hence, who needs what kind of information, it is
(when you know this) the easiest way to keep people motivated at all different criticism levels
in the group.
The place where I want to be is in a situation in which the weaker group-members (in the
sense of standing up for themselves in group-discussions) get their chance ventilating their
opinions. Another thing about the situation I would like to be in, is by doing this without
affecting the stronger members of the group to discuss less (or to be less critical). A reason
why I do not want this is because it will give them the feeling that their criticism is not
appreciated while I think that you need critical members in the group. Although being not that
critical might also be a cultural thing, I think you need some members in the group who are
critical.
Importance of informal opinion building
Another thing I noticed is the importance of the opinion of the majority of the group. I assume
that everybody has an opinion about everything they notice. The important thing about this is
how they handle these opinions. It sprang to my mind that before ventilating opinions (in the
whole group) most people first check whether there are some other people thinking the same
way. This kind of talks is really important because they are done in an informal surrounding

but they influence the group-members nevertheless. This kind of conversation is also
important because of the informality surrounding it. You learn the actual opinions of people
without having to defend their selves for the whole group. The thing that happens in these
kinds of situations is actually shaping that opinion and checking whether it is strong or
important enough to do something with this, or to inform the group about this.
Another thing I noticed is that when somebody does that, they are actually already
convincing each other (which I will refer to as group-opinion). Although this is in such an
informal setting that most people do not think of this as being convinced, but rather as coming
up with this opinion together. This is an important thing going on in groups. This is what I see
a way of making a group-opinion; to come op with an opinion about something together. I
think it is rather obvious that this happens but the thing is how to handle this. Or actually, the
thing I am trying to find out here is how I can be a part of an opinion before it is really
