efficiency, some integrating role may help more to promote the sharing of information and
knowledge to enhance organizational goals.
Since people refers to the employees and their working area, to increase the efficiency there
may also be improvements with these working places that we observed in Company X. When
handling the second production area as a group, we saw that more comfortable working
conditions that makes them easy to move and provide ergonomic working environment for the
workers who work under stress with a lot of working responsibilities in a very limited time
with the automated machines. The working places could be much more clean and functional
as well. Besides, the communication between the people could be much stronger. For the
workers who need high observation and caution, short working times may also be arranged.
Frequent and short breaks may keep them motivated and concentrated as well. What we
observed in Company X is that there were job rotations of the workers shifting in similar
work stations. However, considering the selection of shift lengths which has a very vital
impact on productivity, we can say that some of the workers may rest more to increase the
effectiveness.
Company X Technology
Since the skilled people and their personal communication and tasks, views, organizational
structures, cooperation will be enough just to eliminate the quality problems from the people
and organization side, it is also necessary to experience in flexible specialization, with an
appropriate flexible production system from the technology perspective.
8
Company X, has modern and flexible production lines where automatic and semi-automatic
machines are used together to produce parts. The inputs are put into outputs at the
organizational level based on large-batch and mass production. During our observations in
Production Island, we realized that these machines and people working together were facing
with quality problems. Therefore, we offered to design new highly automated production lines
where the manufacturing will be in a stable and secure process and allow for decentralized
flexible structures to support and strengthen group autonomy. By using more automated
machines, there will be less individual errors and therefore the labor cost will decrease and the
quality of final products may increase. By using quality and full simulation checking during
the process the reliability will increase as well.
At the input stage, technology-skills, procedures, techniques, and competences-are very
important for Company X to handle relationships with outside stakeholders so that it can
manage its relations with its environment. To reduce the quality problems and improve the
technology, we suggested improving supplier quality demands. Additionally, we suggested to
use magnifying glasses to make it easier to see the right positions.
Conclusion
Considering the mass production today in many companies, it is not sufficiently flexible to
respond to the dynamics and challenges of the world market. Company X could improve the
automation of production, computer-supported information and cooperation networks,
multimedia applications in production planning and control. It may also help in the long run
to expand and attempts to further improve production and service performance towards
human-centredness. On the other hand, to minimize the time consuming effects of new
technologies on workers when the work procedures changed, it may also help to change the
working habits and to adapt the new technology by changing the level of educated workers. It
may not work always using more technology; it may be rather to combine the desired human
skills: incentives/motivation, interdisciplinary skills, team-working, communication,
leadership with proposed organisational measures: such as better co-ordination, new
organisational structures, new management paradigms, career planning, special
training/education of managers, continuing education of employees in the above-mentioned
human skills. The Degree of Automation achieved through implementing this technology, the
9
Degree of Networking implemented with this new technology, the Degree of Dynamics of
changes and the Degree of Formalization of human communication and cooperation to be
accepted by humans using this technology should be the basic concepts for Company X and
many other companies today. It includes evaluating the technology and new concepts
concerning strategies, organisation, people and technologies as shown in detail and
combination below.
