aspects which lead to the solution. This means that every group takes care of one special
part of the problem and find a solution.
For example, one group takes care of the financial aspects of the project, another one of
the employees and so on. Of course every different splitting, depending on the task, is
possible. Important in this picture shown above is, that this flowchart only shows the
group splitting, not the workflow of the groups itself. Therefore, every group can be
divided in groups again (especially at big projects) with the same organisational structure
as shown in this diagram. For example the afore mentioned financial group can work as
indicated in the picture again (P1 (Problem 1), P2, P3…). This leads us to a kind of
parallel working structure, because every group is collecting ideas again, find the best
solution and follow this process to the end. This is why the communication channels
(indicated as the red arrows) are so important. The groups have to communicate among
each other in order to produce compatible solutions and to have an overview at which
level the other groups are in. The last step is again to come together as a whole group and
connect the found part solutions to one whole solution.

Experience Training
Fig. 3.1: Leadership Circle
To be a leader of a group is not only to be a leader by definition, it is more a process for
all members of the group and especially for the leader himself. The Leadership circle as it
is shown above describes this process. It is a circle of learning. I will begin with the
education, although there is no beginning and no end of this process. Education is the
theoretical side and mostly the first step as for example in universities or workshops. The
learned material can be tested with training, which is more a practical thing and shows, if
the education can be used during the training. Out of this training we gain some
experiences from which we learn again. For example mistakes which occurred during the
training would not happen a second time, because we already experienced mistakes and
therefore should not happen again. Out of the experience we got from the training we
learned something about ourselves as well, which probably (and hopefully) reveals some
weaknesses on which we can work on. Then we start again to learn more about the
weakness we discovered, at first on an educational theoretical level.
4. Connection between Leadership and Problem Solving
4.1 Introduction
7
In this chapter I want to talk about the connection of the two topics mentioned above. This
is, which kind of motivation or tasks the leader has to fulfil during the different steps of a
project. This means for example which role the leader has to take during the “Collecting
Idea Step” and how he or she is supposed to motivate the people in the group for the
whole project and get everybody together.
I do not insist to consider every possible situation or way of behaving in certain steps. It is
rather a reflection of what I have learned so far and observed during my stay with
ESTIEM Summer Academy 2007 in Hungary.

Tasks of the Leader
The Fig. above shows the “Problem Solution Method” and the “Tasks of the Leader”
chain, which already shows the connection between leadership and Problem Solving.
This time, the picture shows on the left hand side the “Problem Solution Method” with the

feedback loop again. On the right hand side there is now an additional drawing in which
you can see the main tasks of the leader during a certain step of the “Problem Solution
Method”. This is the motivation and communication in the first place during the
identification phase. In the second step the role of the leader is changing to a discussion
leader. The main words used in the picture are motivation, communication, leading,
keeping and coordinating. There are, of course, many more aspects about every step, but
when we consider only the mentioned words the complexity of leadership is already
visible.
