Abstract: This essay gives an overview about the issue of religion mainly. Since the topic is one
of the most individualised issues on earth, instead of finding a solution or coming up with a
certain idea, we were getting ideas of multi-cultural sample group which contains nine people and
five nationalities(Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Hungary and Turkey) out of SAC Budapest
2007 participants. We had an idea about what young people -whose ages are between 20 and 24-
around Europe think about the functions and effects of religion to the modern society.

1. INTRODUCTION
Mankind asks the questions “what is religion?”, “what is its function, why do we need it?”
for thousands of years. Here in ESTIEM Summer Academy 2007, participants from five
different nationalities had the chance to share ideas and to learn what people from other
cultures think about religion and how do they live it. Each of them, to learn what they
want to, wrote down his/her own statements about any aspect of religion which are
considered under four sub-topics in this essay. Our process is below:
1. We found people who want to discuss about religion.
2. We decided to discuss silently (on papers); writing down individual statements, asking for
comments from each one.
3. We classified the statements into 4 sub groups: Religion&Individuals, Religion&Society,
Religion&Politics, Religion&Organization
4. We read the comments for each statements and indicated the keywords for their point of
views (agree/disagree).
5. We checked for the majority of ideas for each statements.
6. We did the summary of what our multi-cultural sample group think about religion.
The summary of group’s thoughts are the following chapters.
2. Functions of religions for individuals and ethical aspects
i. Religion gives ethical rules to people who can’t or don’t want to create them on their own,
so it makes their lives easier. (Agi)
Agreeing comments
 Nese (They need rules),
 Dietrich (Society needs rules),
David (own values are based on religion),
Aron ( people learn ethics in religious families),
Philip (religion get people obey the rules).
Disagreeing Comments
Juli (religions have more than rules),
Koray (one can create own rules, then doesn’t need the religion),
Bob (to be critical about the message)
3
ii. Religion is the peoples´ opium, a way for people to flee from reality.(Philip)
Agreeing comments
Bob: People use religion to cope with reality
Koray: It was not the goal of religions at the beginning, but it is opium now
Juli: People probably want to get away from the rush everyday
Dietrich: It was a drug to keep people under control
Agi: Fleeing from reality makes unnecessary to create own principles
Nese: religion is the long term helper, drugs are short term…
iii. Religion is being used as an excuse to do and not to do certain things(BOB)
Agreeing comments
Koray (also as a goal of religion, people are examined whether they use their mind
or not), Juli (it can be a way of manipulating people and can be used as an excuse to do
terrible things),
Agi (religion is the best way to manipulate people),
Nese (it is a kind of manipulation in most of the cases in life, especially in
politics),
David ( it is being misused),
Philip (one of the reason we got religion is because it can manipulate and silence
the people)
Disagreeing Comments
Dietrich (there are people from different religions fighting for better ethical
actions)
3. Views of religions’ about social&ethical issues from different perspectives
