E. Procedure

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE STRUT COMPARTMENTS ARE FREE OF TOOLS, LOOSE
_______ MATERIALS, AND CONTAMINATION. DAMAGE TO THE STRUT COULD OCCUR.
(1)
Before you install the access panel, remove, all tools, loose material, and contamination from the strut compartment.

(2)
Do these steps to install the forward fairing (Fig. 401):
(a)
Put the forward fairing on the strut.
(b)
Engage the top of the forward fairing and install the clips to the top of the fairing.
(c)
Put the aft edge of the fairing on the strut and install the clips to the edge of the fairing.
(d)
Install the screws at 28 locations.
(e)
Tighten the screws to 25-35 pound-inches
(2.8-3.6 Newton meters).

(3) Do these steps to install the mid-strut fairing (Fig. 403):
(a)
MID-STRUT FAIRINGS WITH "PHILIP HEAD" SCREWS; Do these steps to install the mid-strut fairing: 1) Put the mid-strut fairing on the strut. 2) Engage the top of the forward fairing and install the clips
to the top of the fairing. 3) Put the aft edge of the fairing on the strut and install the clips to the edge of the fairing. 4) Tighten the screws 25-35 pound-inches (2.8-3.6 Newton meters).
(b)
MID-STRUT FAIRINGS WITH THE "QUICK-RELEASE" HEXAGONAL HEAD FASTENERS; Install the mid-strut fairing (Fig. 403) as follows: 1) Put the mid-strut fairing on the strut. 2) Engage the top of the forward fairing and install the clips
on the top of the fairing. 3) Put the aft edge of the fairing on the strut and install
the clips to the edge of the fairing. 4) Engage the fasteners into the strut receptacles. 5) Tighten the fasteners to 30 pound-inches (3.4 Newton
meters).

(4) Do these steps to install the forward fairing on the wing leading edge (Fig. 402):
(a) If not already done, attach the inboard fairing to the outboard fairing with the bolts.
NOTE: The outboard fairing has nutplates.

(b) At each of the four corners of the fairing assembly and to each side of the joint between the inboard and outboard fairings, apply an approximately 1.0 x 1.0 inch (25.4 x 25.4 mm) square area of the sealant BMS 5-95 to the aluminum strip.
NOTE: The sealant will keep water and moisture away from
____ the inside of the strut, where it can freeze and damage the fairing.
1) Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the sealant.
(c) Put the fairing assembly on the strut and make sure it is correctly aligned.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU TIGHTEN THE BOLTS, USE A TORQUE CONTROL TOOL TO
_______ MAKE SURE THE BOLTS ARE TIGHTENED FULLY. IF THE BOLTS ARE NOT FULLY TIGHTENED, THEY COULD BECOME LOOSE AND FALL FROM THE AIRPLANE.
(d)
Use a torque control tool to attach the bolts to the fairing at 40 locations. 1) Tighten the 3/16 inch bolts to 25-35 pound-inches
(2.8-3.6 Newton meters). 2) Tighten the 1/4 inch bolts (if present) to 70 - 80 pound-inches (7.90-9.04 Nm).
(e)
Do a check of the aerodynamic smoothness of the fairing (AMM 54-10-00/501).
F. Put the Airplane Back To Its Usual Condition

(1) Do the activation procedure for the thrust reverser
(AMM 78-31-00/201).
