NACELLE STRUT - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_________________________________________
1. General_______
A. The strut attaches to the wing in four places: the upper link, two mid spar fittings, and diagonal brace. Engine mount loads are transmitted through these members to the wing.
B. Strut (pylon) attaches the engine to the wing with the upper link, mid spar fittings and diagonal brace.
(1)
The upper link attches the strut upper spar to the wing with a fuse pin at the wing attach point. The forward attach point at the strut upper spar to upper link is not fused.
(2)
Midspar fittings directly connect the strut to the wing with fuse shoulder bolts and provide stability against side sway of strut.
(3)
The diagonal brace connects to the wing with a fuse pin at the diagonal brace to wing attach point. The diagonal brace to the strut lower spar connection is not fused.
C. The strut is essentially a frame and skin structure attached by fasteners to form a torque box. Outside skins are riveted to bulkheads, spars and frames.
(1)
Spars are the primary load carrying member in the strut. Spars are spanwise structural members made of steel chords and webs. The upper spar fitting attaches to the upper link, the midspar attaches to the midspar fitting, and the lower spar fitting attaches to the diagonal brace.
(2)
Bulkheads are transverse structural members made of forged aluminum or steel, if required by heat or stress environment.
(3)
Engine mount fittings are attached to bulkheads with lockbolts.
(4)
Thrust link fittings are attached to structure with bolts and barrel nuts.
D. Engine and thrust reverser loads are transmitted through the strut to the wing.
E. The bottom portion of the strut from the forward engine mount aft to the aft bulkhead is constructed of stainless steel or titanium to form a fire barrier between the engine hot section and the mechanisms and lines passing through the strut inner structure to operate the engine.
F. Movable cowl panels are hinged to the forward portion of the strut. Thrust reverser panels are hinged to the mid portion of the strut.
