For over 30 minutes between 10-
13,000 feet ASL, each crew member
must use supplemental oxygen. All
persons on board must use it for all
flight above 13,000 feet ASL.
The handling pilot must use an
oxygen mask if the aircraft is not
equipped with quick-donning oxygen
masks at or above FL 250, or it does
have them, but above FL 410.
Flight Data Recorders
These aircraft must have a suitable
Flight Data Recorder:
·  multi-engined turbine-powered
pressurized aeroplanes over
5,700 kg (12,500 lbs), able to
carry more than 10 passengers,
made after October 11, 1991,
and operated under Subpart 4
of Part VII
·  multi-engined turbine-powered
aeroplanes operated under
Subpart 5 of Part VII
·  after July 31, 1997 or, for
aircraft operated under Part VII,
after February 28, 1997, multiengined
turbine-powered
aircraft capable of carrying more
Air Law 95
than 10 passengers, made after
October 11, 1991.
FDRs must record at least the time,
PA, IAS, vertical acceleration and
magnetic heading. When carrying
passengers, you must add force on
the control column, rudder pedals or
control wheels, or their positions,
the position of horizontal stabilizer,
out-of-trim condition, whether the
auto-pilot is on or off, engine power
(torque, RPM, fuel flow), ambient air
temperature and pitch attitude.
There are also requirements as to
how data is recorded, according to
how many seats the aircraft has.
When required, FDRs must be on
continuously from the start of takeoff
until the completion of landing.
An FDR may be missing under an
MEL. If there isn’t one, you can fly
without one for 90 days if the CVR
is working and the date of failure is
shown in the technical records.
Cockpit Voice Recorders - 605.34
Must continuously record voice
signals transmitted from, or received
in, the aircraft about its operation,
the aural environment of the flight
deck, including each microphone
used by a crew member, the
intercom and PA system, and
identification of navaids. If the
aircraft is made after October 11,
1991 and brought onto the register
after the effective date of this
standard, you also need a time scale,
and must record the uninterrupted
audio signals received by a boom or
mask microphone (which must be
used below 10,000 feet AMSL).
Information must be recorded for
the duration of the flight or the last
thirty minutes, whichever is less.
These aircraft must have a suitable
Cockpit Voice Recorder:
·  multi-engined turbine-powered
pressurized aeroplanes over 5
700 kg (12,500 lbs) in Weight,
capable of carrying more than 6
passengers, needing more than
2 pilots, and operated under
Subpart 4 of Part VII
·  multi-engined turbine-powered
aeroplanes operated under
Subpart 5 of Part VII
·  after July 31, 1997 or, for
aircraft under Part VII, after
February 28, 1997, multiengined
turbine-powered
aircraft capable of carrying more
than 6 passengers, for which 2
pilots are required.
When required, CVRs must be
operated continuously from when
power is first applied before flight to
when it is removed afterwards. You
cannot erase relevant
communications from a CVR.
A CVR may be missing under an
MEL. If there isn’t one, you can fly
without one for 90 days if the FDR
is working and the date of failure is
shown in the technical records.
Transponder and Automatic PA
Reporting Equipment - 605.35
Except balloons or gliders, aircraft
flying where a transponder is
required must have one with
pressure-altitude reporting, unless
under an MEL. Otherwise, you may
go to the next landing point and
thereafter, under ATC instructions,
to complete a planned schedule or
proceed to a maintenance facility if
safety will not be affected and the
96 Canadian Professional Pilot Studies
request was received before the
airspace was entered.
Altitude Alerting System or Device -
605.36/625.36
Needed by turbo-jets, unless
operating under an MEL. Otherwise,
you can fly to a place where it can be
installed, for flight testing (of the
aircraft or crew) or until you get to
where it can be repaired or replaced,
if it fails after takeoff.
Such equipment must alert you on
approaching a preselected altitude,
ascending or descending, quickly
