for planning and presenting
preparatory ground instruction, preflight
briefings, in-flight instruction,
and post-flight debriefings, theory of
flight for air exercises, aircraft flight
manuals and operating limits,
presentation of pilot decisionmaking
concepts, and the use of the
Transport Canada Flight Instructor
Guide, Flight Training Manual, CARs,
Part IV and the Flight Test Standards,
Private and CPLs—Aeroplane or
Helicopter Category. You must also
get at least 70% in the AIRAF or
HIRAF exams, and Flight Instructor
Rating—Helicopter—Instrument
Instruction (FIREN), for helicopters.

Experience
You must have at least 30 hours dual
instruction on overall pilot
proficiency and the presentation of
all exercises in the Flight Instructor
Guide, with at least 5 hours training
in the teaching of instrument flight
skills. Up to 5 of the 30 hours may
be conducted on an approved
simulator or flight training device.
Skill
You must pass the flight test in the
Flight Test Standard—Flight
Instructor Rating—Aeroplanes,
Helicopters, Aerobatic (TP5537).
Credits
If you hold, or have held an
instructor rating for helicopters
(when applying for an aeroplane
rating, and vice versa), gyroplanes,
gliders, balloons or aerobatics, you
are exempt 10 of the 25 hours
ground school. The same goes for an
ATPL, or a teaching certificate
issued by provincial or territorial
authorities (you can’t claim both).
A helicopter instructor rating
exempts you from the aeroplane
written exam, and vice versa.
If you hold, or have held, a
Helicopter Instructor Rating, you are
exempt 10 of the 30 hours' dual, and
the 5 hours’ training in the teaching
of instrument flight skills. An ATPLAeroplane
exempts you from 10 of
the 30 hours' dual. The reverse is
true for helicopters.
For aeroplanes, if you hold, or have
held in the last 24 months, a
Canadian Forces Instructor Category
for initial flight training in the
opposite category, you are exempt
10 of the 25 hours ground school. A
(Canadian Forces) QFI Category for
single-engine aeroplanes, or QHI
Category for helicopters, exempts
you from 15 hours.
A Canadian Forces QFI/QHI
Category for single-engine
aeroplanes or helicopters, as
appropriate, gets you up to 15 hours
equivalent experience towards the 30
hours of dual instruction for the
opposite category.
If you hold, or have held, in the last
24 months, an Instructor Rating
from a Contracting State, you are
exempt 10 of the 25 hours ground
school, or 15 if the rating is in the
appropriate category.
If you hold, or have held, in the
previous 24 months, a rating from a
Contracting State, you are exempt 10
of the 25 hours ground school, and
can claim up to 15.of equivalent
experience towards the 30 hours
dual instruction.
Validity
To the first day of the thirteenth
month following the month the test
was conducted.
Class 3 - 421.70/78
Privileges
You may exercise the privileges of a
Class 4 instructor and act as CFI of a
flight training unit (aeroplanes only)
if you are the only one.
Prerequisites
You need to be a Class 4 Instructor,
but not if you are a Canadian Forces
QFI or an instructor from a
Contracting State, if the state has a
reciprocal agreement, and the rating
was not based on one from a State
without agreement.

Knowledge
A Forces or foreign instructor with
at least 750 hours ab-initio
instruction experience must
complete ground instruction (i.e. no
specified minimum) to cover the
Knowledge requirement for a Class 4
Rating, obtain a letter of
recommendation from a Class 1
Instructor before attempting the
AIRAF (for aeroplanes), or HIRAF
and FIREN (for helicopters) written
exams, and get at least 70% in each.
With between 300-750 hours, you
must also do at least 10 hours
ground instruction.
Experience
You must have conducted at least
100 hours dual instruction for the
issue of a pilot licence—Forces or
foreign instructors described above
are exempt.
Skill
You must complete an "Instructor's
Training Record While Under Direct
Supervision" form, proving you have
authorized at least 3 students for
their first solos, recommended at
