any phase of operation), performing
normal and emergency procedures.
Restricted Licence—Aerial Work
If you haven’t got the instrument or
night hours for a full helicopter
licence, you can get a restricted one
for aerial work only, if you have the
total dual and solo required. The
restriction will be removed when you
get the hours.
Credits—Experience
Gliders
Up to 50 hours in gliders
towards the 1500-hour total
time (aeroplanes).
Three Axis Ultra-lights
Up to 50 hours in gliders
towards the 1500-hr total time
(aeroplanes).
DND Applicants
A Group 1 IR (unrestricted), or
on a helicopter that needs a copilot,
covers skill requirements.
Training (PIC U/S) - 421.11
Operators with large aeroplanes
may supervise co-pilots so they can
build PIC time. Operators using
small aeroplanes and helicopters
may do so as well, if Transport
Canada agrees they are capable.
In any case, supervisory pilots must
be briefed by Transport Canada. The
time may be acquired in the copilot's
seat if the PIC functions
concerned can be performed from it,
otherwise, you must have at least ten
hours in the pilot’s seat.
Air Law 11
The time must include at least the
flight functions of a PIC, including
flight planning, takeoff, landing, en
route flying and approach (not
taxying) and at least one takeoff and
landing for each 10 hours flight time.
For an ATPL – Aeroplane, you can
claim up to 100 hours PIC U/S, if
you hold a CPL—Aeroplane with
multi-engined and suitable type
ratings, a Group I Instrument Rating
and at least 150 hours PIC in
aeroplanes. For an ATPL –
Helicopter, you can claim up to 150
hours PIC U/S, if you hold a
CPL(H) with a suitable type rating
and over 100 hours PIC helicopters.
The time above must be acquired in
the 12 months before the date of
application. You must submit a
personal log or other reliable record
containing a summary of P1/US
time and total takeoffs and landings,
and indicate the portions claimed on
the application form.
Foreign Licences - 421.07
For non-residents. A Foreign Licence
Validation Certificate is normally valid
for a year. You must provide the
licence, a letter of request, and the
reasons why it is needed, such as
flight testing, private flying, ferrying,
etc. If the medical lasts longer than
the ICAO standard, the validation is
limited to Canadian airspace, and the
validation period to no longer than
the Canadian medical.
Type Ratings - 401.40/421.40
You can find out the minimum crew
for any aircraft in the Minimum Crew
Document, which could be a type
approval certificate, flight permit,
flight manual or pilot’s operating
handbook. Some machines need two
pilots for IFR and can get by with
one under VFR.
Blanket Type Ratings
These are issued for all single-crew
aeroplanes, excluding high
performance (normally combined
with a class rating, such as "all single
pilot, non-high performance single
engine land aeroplanes"), all gliders,
non-power driven balloons, ultralights
and single seat gyroplanes.
Individual Type Ratings
Required for every helicopter, or
high performance or multi-crew
aeroplane on your licence.
Aeroplane—Two Crew
Knowledge
You need ground and flight
training on type and, for a PPL
or CPL, at least 70% in either
the Type Rating—Aeroplane
(IATRA) or ATPL written
exams (SAMRA and SARON),
in the last 24 months, but you
must also have 50% of the
hours for the ATPL to do the
latter. If you have an ATPL, you
are exempt the writtens.
Experience
Complete flight training on type
and have over 250 hours on
aeroplanes.
Skill
You must have passed a PPC
on type in the last 12 months.
12 Canadian Professional Pilot Studies
