the Flight Instructor Guide-Aeroplane
(TP 975).
Credits
If you have a night rating in another
category, the total of 20 hours is
reduced to at least 5 in the relevant
class, which must include at least 2
hours dual night, 1 hour solo night,
and 1 hour dual instruments, which
must be in addition.
Instrument Rating -
401.46/421.46
Group 1 covers multi-engined
aeroplanes, Group 2 multi-engine
centre line thrust and single engined
aeroplanes, Group 3 single engined
aeroplanes, and Group 4 helicopters.
Privileges
You may use your licence under
IFR, and privileges of VFR OTT.
Requirements
Knowledge
At least 70% in INRAT, after
gaining over 50% of the total time
and 20 on instruments (flight or
ground). If you fail, you must wait at
least 14 days before a resit.
Experience
At least 50 hours cross-country as
PIC (10 in the appropriate category)
and 40 on instruments, of which up
to 20 may be done on the ground.
The 40 hours must include at least 5
hours dual from an instructor, in
aeroplanes (for Group 1, 2 or 3), or
in helicopters (Group 4). You also
need 15 hours dual under an IFR
instructor, with one dual crosscountry
flight under simulated or
actual IMC of at least 100 nm, under
an IFR flight plan to include at, two
different locations, an instrument
approach to minima.
Group 1 training can be done by an
instructor with an instrument rating
for the group concerned. If you
don’t have a multi rating, the
instructor must have at least 50
hours PIC on multis, with 10 of that
on type. Alternatively, you can use a
CPL holder with an IR, with 500
hours PIC, 100 of which are in the
appropriate group and 10 on type.
Skill
You must pass a flight test under the
Flight Test Standards—Instrument
Rating (TP 9939E), or an IFR PPC
under Part VI or VII, as applicable.
Credits for DND Applicants
You can use a military instructor to
get the experience above. You are
exempt the flight test if you have
your wings or hold an appropriate
unrestricted Canadian Forces IR,
and you have the experience above.
Foreign Applicants
You can use a foreign military
instructor to get experience if they
have equivalent qualifications.
Validity - 421.48
24 months, calculated to the first day
of the twenty-fifth month following
the month the test was conducted,
although you can get one for less
than that. Put another way, it’s 24
months, plus the remainder of the
month of issue. If you renew in the
90 days before it was due to expire,
you can claim the original validity
date, that is, you get 27 months.
Air Law 15
Recency
You must have done the test in the
appropriate group (aircraft or sim)
within the past 12 months. In the
previous 6 months, you must have
done 6 hours on instruments and 6
approaches to appropriate minima
(aircraft or sim, simulated or actual)
– this may be done while instructing.
Alternatively, do a PPC including the
instrument stuff in CASS.
Renewal - 421.49
You must pass the flight test. If your
IR expired more than 24 months
ago, you must also get at least 70%
in INRAT, although you are exempt
if you also hold a CPL or ATPL
from a Contracting State and pass
their IR test working commercially
outside Canada inside the previous
12 months, and give Transport
Canada a copy of the paperwork.
You are also exempt INRAT if you
hold a Second Officer Rating or a
Flight Engineer Licence and you
work for hire or reward for a
Canadian air carrier operating
aircraft requiring a Second Officer or
a Flight Engineer, and you
previously held an IR and CPL.
If you hold a Canadian Forces
unrestricted IR and your civil IR
expired more than 24 months ago,
you don’t need to take INRAT if
your pilot licence is valid and your
Forces renewal was done in the
appropriate type.
An IR can be extended for up to 90
days if the application is made while
it is valid and you can prove you
haven’t been able to take the test.
Recency - 401.05/421.05
Unless you’re a flight engineer, you
must have acted as PIC or P2 in the
last 5 years, or 12 months if you do a
check ride (flight review) with an
instructor who certifies your log
book, and you pass any exams
required here, like PSTAR. The
review must include all items in the
