For a Pilot Permit—Gyroplane,—
Recreational-Aeroplane, or a PPL,
you must have 10 hours in the same
category, or hold a valid Pilot Permit
for Ultra-lights. For a Class 4
Instructor Rating, you need to
complete 50% of the flight training,
and all the ground school. For a
higher class, you must have 50% of
the experience required. An IR
requires at least 20 hours of
instrument flight or ground time.
Otherwise, you need at least 50%
whatever is required.
When it comes to flight tests, for a
Pilot Permit—Gyroplane or a PPL
you need at least 35 hours in the
same category, and for a Pilot
Permit—Recreational –
6 Canadian Professional Pilot Studies
Aeroplane, at least 25 hours.
Otherwise, it’s at least 75% of
whatever is required.
Proof of Citizenship and Age
You can use:
·  Citizenship certificate
·  Certificate of Registration of Birth
Abroad
·  Birth or baptismal certificate (or
certified copy) issued in Canada
or a state whose citizens do not
need a passport to travel there.
·  Passport. With no expiry date, get
attestation from your State
·  Aviation licence showing relevant
citizenship
·  Canadian Immigration Record and
Visa, or Form IMM1,000, as
issued to landed immigrants.
Medicals
Before you have one, you, as a
holder of a Canadian aviation
document imposing certain
standards, should advise the
physician or optometrist. They, in
turn, must advise the authorities of
any defect affecting your licence, if
they suspect you are in aviation.
Medicals are only valid if you meet the
initial issuing requirements. A Board of
Inquiry or insurance company may
interpret the words “medically fit” a
little differently than you think if you
fly with a cold or under the influence
of alcohol. In any case, you should
talk to a medical examiner as soon as
possible in the case of:
Currently, your medical certificate,
once issued, lasts for four renewals,
stamped by the doctor at each one.
Category 1
Required for an ATPL or CPL, valid
for 12 months under 40 and 6
months if over, plus the remainder
of the month of issue. Your first one
requires an ECG and Audio test, the
former being repeated every two
years between 30-40 years of age and
every year over 40, and the latter at
the first medical after 55. Otherwise,
your vision must be at least 20/30
for each eye and you only need a
chest x-ray at the initial exam if a
respiratory problem is suspected.
Category 2
For Air Traffic and Flight Engineer
Licences.
Category 3
For PPLs and Student Pilot Permits.
You need an ECG for the first one
after the age of 40. You should hear
the examiner whispering softly 6 feet
away, otherwise you will need an
audiogram. Each eye must be 20/30,
and you only need a chest x-ray at
the initial exam if a respiratory
problem is suspected. It is valid for
60 months under 40 and 24 months
if over, and counts for gyroplane and
balloon pilots as well. Medicals for
Student pilots last for 60 months
regardless of age. Overseas, validity
periods last only for 24 months.
Category 4
For Recreational Pilot Permits (see
below). You just need to sign a
declaration (Form 26-0297) which is
countersigned by any physician.
Commercial Pilot Licence
Unless otherwise mentioned,
references to helicopters and
Air Law 7
aeroplanes concern the appropriate
class of aircraft.
Privileges
You may exercise the privileges of a
PPL, a VFR OTT rating (aeroplanes)
or act as PIC or co-pilot in a
commercial air service if a singlecrew
aeroplane or helicopter is
endorsed on your licence.
You may not fly at night with a
licence issued for day flying.
Age
You must be at least eighteen.
Medical Fitness and Validity
You must have a Cat 1 Medical,
which is valid for 12 months under
40 and 6 months over that, but you
may exercise PPL privileges until the
end of the PPL period. The licence
is maintained by a valid Category 1
Medical Certificate.
Knowledge
You must complete at least 40 hours
commercial ground school, covering
the usual stuff, and get at least 60%
in the mandatory areas of the
CPAER or CPHEL exam. If you
don’t already hold a PPL(H), you
must do another 40 hours
