The plan may be computer
generated or produced manually
from charts and tables by the crew,
in which case an approved form
displaying the above information
with enough space to make entries as
the flight progresses must be used.
The Ops Manual must specify how
formal acceptance of the operational
flight plan by the PIC shall be
recorded.
If you've got room, leave a blank line
between each sector to help deal
with reroutings and direct clearances.
When given changes in heading,
altitude, squawk or radio frequency,
write them down and cross the old
one out. It's too easy to forget when
things are busy.
Journey Log
A system for recording defects and
maintenance between scheduled
servicing, as well as information
relevant to flight safety and
maintenance. In other words, the
formal communication between
flight crews and engineering.
The aircraft may never be more than
25 nm away from it, so it normally
66 Canadian Professional Pilot Studies
must be on board, except if you do
not plan to land and shut down
anywhere other than the point of
departure, or you are flying a balloon
and the log is immediately available
before and after the flight.
Single entries for a series of flights
may not be made unless they are
done by the same pilot, or a daily
flight record is used as per Section
406.56. Dual signatures are required
when engine or primary flight
controls have been modified,
repaired, replaced or disassembled.
Entries must be retained for at least
one year, or three if the aircraft is
registered under Section 202.16 and
the journey log is used for recording
flight time. It must also be kept for
three years after the date of removal
of service, and two entries must be
transferred from the old one when
starting a new one.
Unless recorded in the operational
flight plan or flight data sheet, the
PIC of an aircraft in a commercial
air service and operating in
international flight must record in
the journey log the following:
·  names of the crew and duties
·  places and times of departure
and arrival
·  the flight time
·  the nature of the flight, i.e.
private, aerial work, etc
·  any incidents or observations
relating to the flight.
Company Operations Manual
The Ops Manual is like the Standing
Orders or SOPs (Standard Operating
Procedures) issued by any military unit,
hospital or other type of large
organisation. It's a book of
instructions that are constant, so that
Company policy can be determined
by reference to it, containing
information and instructions that
enable all Operating Staff (i.e. you)
to perform their duties. It’s partly to
save you constantly pestering Those
On High, but mainly for situations
where you can’t speak to them
anyway and need information with
which to make decisions. As part of
the Operating Staff of a Company,
you are subject to the rules and
requirements in it, and it's your
responsibility to be fully conversant
with the contents at all times. You
will be expected to read it at regular
intervals, if only because it gets
amended from time to time.
The Ops Manager is usually
responsible for the contents and
amendment policy (he may well have
written it as well). Amendments,
when issued, consist of dated and
printed replacement pages on which
the text affected is marked, ideally by
a vertical line in the margin.
On receipt of an amendment list,
those responsible for copies of the
manual incorporate the amendment
in theirs and record it on the form in
the front. You should find a
proposal form for changes
somewhere as well.
The prime objective for the Ops
Manual in the first place is to
promote safety in Company flying
operations. As the authorities are
involved, it’s therefore compiled in
accordance with the law (in fact, as
far as you are concerned it is the law)
and all flights should be conducted
to the standards set out in it.
Air Law 67
Usually in several parts, it can be a
single volume with a small operator,
or several in the average airline.
They will consist of:
Part Contents
A The main volume, with Company
admin and operating policy.
B Flight Manuals and performance
schedules for each type operated.
