Experience
Aeroplanes
You need at least 200 hours (in
aeroplanes), of which at least 100 is
PIC, including 20 cross-country.
After your PPL, you must do 65
hours’ commercial training in
aeroplanes, at least 35 hours dual,
including 5 at night (at least 2 crosscountry),
5 hours cross-country (by
day), which may include that done at
night and 20 hours instruments on
top, of which up to 10 may be done
in a simulator.
You also need 30 hours solo, 25 of
which must emphasize your general
flying skills, to include a crosscountry
inside at least a 300 nm
radius from the departure point and
at least 3 landings at points other
than that of departure, with 5 hours
solo by night, to include at least 10
takeoffs, circuits and landings.
Helicopters
You need at least 100 hours , of
which at least 35 hours is PIC,
including 10 hours cross-country.
For PPL(H) holders, Canadian or
otherwise, you need 60 hours of
commercial training, 37 being dual
(with 15 hours advanced dual, to
include 5 hours cross-country),
emphasising the improvement of
your general flying ability and skill.
Also, 5 hours at night, including at
least 2 cross-country, and 10 hours
instruments, using suitable navaids
and radios, 5 hours of which must
be done in helicopters (up to 5 in an
approved simulator). Up to 5 hours
dual instrument training for the
PPL(H) can be counted towards the
10 hours dual instrument time.
23 hours solo, emphasizing the
improvement of general flying ability
and skill, including a cross-country at
least 2 hours long at normal cruising
speed, including at least 3 landings at
points other than the point of
departure, and 5 hours solo by night,
including at least 10 takeoffs, circuits
and landings.

No PPL(H)
You must do at least 100 hours
commercial training in helicopters,
55 being dual, including 5 crosscountry,
and 10 dual instruments,
using suitable navaids and radios, at
least 5 of which is in helicopters (up
to 5 may be in a simulator).
35 hours solo, emphasizing
improvement of general flying ability
and skill, with a cross-country at
least 2 hours long at normal cruise
from departure, including landings at
3 other points.
The licence is restricted to day.
Skill
You must have done a flight test in
the last 12 months, to the Flight Test
Standard Private and CPLs—Aeroplanes
(TP2655E), or Helicopters (TP3077E).
However, you have to write the
exam first.
Restricted Licence—Daylight Flying
If you don’t manage the night hours,
you can still get a licence, but
restricted to day only, if you meet
the total dual and solo times
required. The restriction will be
removed once you gain the hours.
If you hold a licence for the other
class with a night rating, the night
experience may be reduced to 5
hours, including 2 dual night, 1 solo
night and 1 dual instrument.
Credits
If you already hold a CPL or higher
for the other class, you can claim 20
of the 40-hour ground school. Also,
instead of writing CPAER, you can
obtain at least 60% in CARAC
(Alternate category).
For helicopters, if you hold a PPL in
another category (not PPL(H)), you
can reduce the 80 hours ground
school to 60. Also, instead of writing
CPHEL, you can obtain at least 60%
in CHRAC (Alternate category).
Flight times may be altered as
follows, if you hold:
· CPL(A) - for CPL(H). You need
at least 60 hours in helicopters,
including the experience above.
· CPL(H) - for CPL(A). You only
need 100 hours in aeroplanes,
including the 65 hours above.
You don’t need a PPL first.
· PPL(H) - for CPL(A). You can
claim up to 50 helicopter hours
towards total time, and up to 25
hours PIC towards PIC time.
· Pilot Licence—Glider - for
CPL(A). Up to 50 hrs in gliders,
not counting towards PIC.
· Three Axis Ultra-light - for
CPL(A). Up to 25 hours PIC
towards the total time, which
doesn’t count towards PIC.
· Instrument Flight. Your
instrument time in helicopters
counts towards the CPL(A), but
you need at least 10 hours dual
instruments in aeroplanes. If
you hold an aeroplane licence,
you can claim instrument time
in aeroplanes for the CPL(H), if
