You must pass a PPC, excluding
takeoffs and landings, on type
within the previous 12 months.
High Performance Aeroplane
Knowledge
Complete type ground training.
Experience
Do the flight training and have
over 200 hours on aeroplanes.
Skill
Within the previous 12 months,
pass a qualifying flight under a
Transport Canada Inspector or
a qualified person.
Second Officer
Experience
In the last 12 months, you must
have done type-related training
by an approved institution.
Skill
You must pass a Second Officer
proficiency check on type.
Helicopter—Two Pilots
Knowledge
Complete ground and flight
training on type and, for a PPL
or CPL holder, obtain at least
70% on the Type Rating –
Helicopter (HATRA) or
ATPL—Helicopter written
exams (HAMRA and HARON)
within the previous 24 months.
If you hold an ATPL already,
you don’t need to take exams.
Experience
You must complete flight
training on type and have at
least 250 hours on helicopters.
Skill
You must pass a PPC on type
within the previous 12 months.
Restricted Type Rating
If you have the knowledge
above, the type rating must be
issued with this restriction:
"(type) restricted to Aerial
Work—Canada and USA
Only", which is removed once
knowledge requirements are
met. If you do not meet the
requirements for a "single pilot
VFR and two pilots IFR"
licence, you will get a restricted
type rating, which will be
removed when you meet them.

Helicopter—One Pilot
In the last 12 months, you must have
passed a flight test for a PPL or
CPL(H) or a PPC on type, or a
qualifying flight.
Other Individual Aircraft Type Ratings
In the last 12 months, you must have
performed a qualifying flight under a
person with supervisory authority.
Credits for DND Applicants
Active and retired members of
Canadian Armed Forces with their
wings meet the qualifying flight
requirement above, if they have
acquired at least 10 hours PIC on
type or qualified as PIC during the
previous 24 months. The PPC
requirement is met if they have
acquired at least 50 hours on the
appropriate type or have qualified as
PIC during the previous 24 months.
Credits for Foreign Applicants
The qualifying flight mentioned
above is not needed if you acquire
least 10 hours PIC on the
appropriate type in the last 12
months. The flight itself may be
done under a qualified person
licensed by a Contracting State, if
you submit a letter from the State’s
Licensing Authority (or other
acceptable source), confirming the
personal log entry, and the
qualification of the person who
supervised the flight.
If you have a two-crew type rating,
the PPC requirement is met with at
least 50 hours on type in the
previous 12 months. It may be
performed by a qualified person
licensed by a Contracting State if you
submit a letter from the State’s
Licensing Authority, or other
acceptable source, confirming the
personal log entry and the
qualification of the person who
supervised the PPC.
Aircraft Type
The type must be in the Canadian
Civil Aircraft Register, except for
aircraft purchased abroad with a
provisional Canadian C of R, or
those manufactured in Canada where
no type approval has yet been issued,
but a certification flight test program
is being conducted (only to flight
test pilots and flight engineers
employed by the manufacturer, or
Transport Canada), or aircraft not in
the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register
where a Canadian type approval, or a
Canadian approved type certificate
has been issued.
Night Rating - 401.42/421.42
For the PPL, as you need a
minimum amount for the CPL and
ATPL anyway.
Experience
You must have at least 20 hours,
including at least 10 at night, to
include at least 5 hours dual (with 2
hours cross-country), and 5 hours
solo, including 10 takeoffs, circuits
and landings, and 10 hours dual
instrument time. Up to 5 of the 10
hours dual instruments may be
instrument ground time, as long as it
is on top of the night time.
Skill
In the last 12 months, you must have
successfully completed a qualifying
flight under a Transport Canada
Inspector or other suitably qualified
person by demonstrating the skills in
