Survival Equipment
Over land, unless:
· you’re in a balloon, glider, hang
glider, gyroplane or ultra-light
· within 25 nm of departure point
in contact with a ground station
Air Law 53
· you are a multi-engined aircraft
South of 66.5 N in IFR in
controlled airspace or along
designated air routes
you must carry suitable survival
equipment (according to season,
area, etc.) to start a fire, provide
shelter and water and make signals.
You can use different equipment as
per the ops manual, and you don’t
need it in an area and season where
survival of people on board is not
jeopardized.
Life Preservers & Flotation Devices
Over water (including taking off or
landing) beyond a point where you
could reach shore if an engine fails,
each person on board must have a
life preserver or other individual
flotation device, easily accessible
when seated.
A land aeroplane, gyroplane,
helicopter or airship over 50 nm
from shore must have a life
preserver for each person.
Life Rafts and Survival Equipment—
Flights over Water - 602.63
In a single-engined aeroplane, or a
multi that cannot maintain flight
with a failed engine, you must carry
life rafts for everyone on board over
100 nm or 30 minutes at cruising
speed, whichever is less, from a
suitable emergency landing site. For
a helicopter, the figures are 25nm
and 15 mins. The distances and
times are doubled if you can
maintain flight with a failed engine,
and doubled again in a transport
category aeroplane.
Life rafts must be easily accessible,
installed in conspicuously marked
locations near an exit and equipped
with an attached survival kit, suitable
for season, area, etc., containing at
least a pyrotechnic signalling device,
a radar reflector, a life raft repair kit,
a bailing bucket and sponge, a
signalling mirror, a whistle, a raft
knife, an inflation pump, dye marker,
a waterproof flashlight, a two day
supply of water (based on one pint
per day per person) or a means of
desalting or distilling salt water for
the same amount, a fishing kit, a
book on sea survival and a first aid
kit containing antiseptic swabs, burn
dressing compresses, bandages and
anti-motion sickness pills.
A list of survival equipment must be
on board with information on how
to use it, together with a survival
manual appropriate for the season
and climate.
First Aid Kit Contents
Must contain the supplies and
equipment for a Type A kit as per
Schedule II of Part V of the Aviation
Occupational Safety and Health
Regulations, and 1 pair of latex gloves.
Emergency Medical Kit
Must be carried on aeroplanes with
more than 100 passenger seats.
Passenger & Cabin Safety
Safe Movement of Passengers
Aeroplanes should be parked to
avoid exposure to hazardous
conditions, to which passengers
must be alerted. There must be
guidance and escorts along safe
routes, smoking restrictions must be
enforced and entertainment system
headsets that decrease awareness of
other traffic or limit reception of
audible direction or warning signals

are not worn. Passengers must be
briefed on how to safely get on and
off when engines are running, and
passengers on float planes must be
alerted to their unique hazards.
Fuelling with Passengers on Board
The pilot must supervise, and be
near the main exit (there must be at
least two on larger aeroplanes) to
immediately communicate with and
assist the evacuation of passengers in
an emergency. One must be the
entry doors through which the
passengers embarked.
Two-way communication must be
maintained between ground crew
supervising fuelling and qualified
personnel on board. All exits must
be clear of obstructions and available
for evacuation. Engines must not be
running unless a propeller brake is
set (see the Flight Manual).
On-board APUs discharging into the
zone must not be started after filler
caps are removed or fuelling
connections are made. If an APU is
stopped during fuelling it must not
