The Elements of a SID
Runway Transitions, Common Segment and Enroute
Transitions
A SID can have several runway transitions, along with one or more
enroute transitions. Between the two, there may be a common
segment. The best way to illustrate these segments is to refer to the
example SID (called UNCTST) shown. This SID uses seven of the
nineteen leg types, and once these are understood, the others
become self evident
CAUTION: THIS EXAMPLE SID IS FOR DEMONSTRATION
PURPOSES ONLY, DO NOT TRY TO FLY IT IF
YOU ARE EVER VISITING TUCSON AZ.
Note that there are two runway transitions: Rwy 11L and Rwy 29R.
Each of these transitions uses a unique string of procedural legs to
navigate to VAINE intersection. At VAINE, the common segment
commences, and terminates at Cochise (CIE) VOR. From CIE,
there are two different enroute transitions: one to San Simon (SSO)
and the other to El Paso (ELP).
Once this SID is defined and stored in memory, it can be called up
by its name UNCTST. When the takeoff runway is selected (11L or
29R), then only those appropriate runway transition legs are inserted
into the flight plan. Similarly, when the enroute transition is selected
(SSO or ELP), only those enroute legs are inserted into the flight
plan.

Defining the UNCTST SID
The following screens will take you through the definition process
step by step.
First, call up the initial definition screen by pressing DATA-PILOT
DATA-SID:
Enter KTUS as the airport. The cursor will advance to the runway
field and a list of runways, if any will appear.
NOTE: If the runways of interest are not in the data base, press
RETURN to access the DATA/PLT page and then press
RUNWAY. Define all runways that will be used for the
SID, then return to the SID definition page by pressing
DATA-PILOT-SID, and entering the airport ident.
Select one of the runways (we’ll do 29R first). The cursor will then
advance to the SID name field, so enter the name of the SID, in this
case UNCTST. The cursor will advance to the Transition field, so
enter SSO here. When we finish the initial SID definition for Rwy
29R and SSO, we’ll then go back and define the other transitions
(Rwy 11L and ELP).

Defining the 29R Transition
The Rwy 29R transition involves the following leg types:
1. Heading to Altitude (Hdg 303° to 3050 ft)
2. Course from Fix to Along Trk Distance (Crs 303° from TUS to
DME 8.0, at or above 4200 ft)
3. Heading to Radial (Lt turn Hdg 140° to TUS R-225°)
4. Direct to Fix (Direct to VAINE intersection)

1. Press SID LEGS line select key to display the legs page. Initially
this page will be blank.
2. Press the line select key next to ‘1’ [1L]. The following LEG
PATH screen will appear:
3. Since the first leg is a Heading to Altitude, press the HDG line
select key. The LEG TERM HEADING TO screen will then
appear:

4. Select the ALTITUDE line select key. The HDG - ALT screen
will then appear. Enter the heading and altitude in each field as
shown.
5. After entering the altitude, the SEGMENT screen will appear.
Select the RWY TRAN line select key.
6. Press ACCEPT to validate this leg. The screen presentation will
return to the SID LEGS screen with the first leg as shown (the
‘R’ in the left column denotes Runway Transition leg):
In a similar fashion, the remaining three legs of the Rwy 29R
transition are entered by selecting the Course From Fix To Along
Track Distance, Heading to Radial, and Direct To Fix screens as
shown below. Each one is defined as a RWY TRAN leg.
