one another. Remember, the "DIFF' values shown will all be large,
but they are showing the difference from each IRS's position to the
possibly contaminated FMS position. This is not what we are
looking for. We're interested in seeing if the raw coordinates for
IRS1 are close to IRS2 and close to IRS3. (The DIFF values can be
used to assist in this process if it is realized that we are looking for
similarity instead of absolute values.) After finding that all three IRSs
are geographically close (allowing for normal errors), it can be
assumed that the OSS is indeed the sensor which is pulling the FMS
position away.
The proper corrective action would be to access the OSS Status
page to deselect OSS 1 and then update the FMS position to the
same latitude/longitude as any one of the IRS positions. The three
IRS DIFF WARN messages should then disappear.
Example 2: The aircraft is flying in a non-DME environment with two
long range nav sensors feeding the FMSs. A message becomes
active saying one of them is drifting (i.e., "OSS1 DIFF 6nm" or "LCS
DIFF 6NM" or "IRS1 DIFF WARN").
This is a tougher situation and requires a judgment call. Using the
"General Rule" described above as a guide; an evaluation must be
made to determine which sensor is in error.
Upon determining the problem sensor, deselect it or update it and
consider updating the FMS best computed position. The message
active on the screen may not indicate the problem sensor as it is
based on the priority conventions outlined above. It remains the
pilot’s responsibility to verify the validity of the error messages.
