between the DMU data transmitter and the VHF voice transmitter.
During power up, the ASU defaults to the voice transmitter.
Pressing the AFIS annunciator on the instrument panel switches the
transmit side of the antenna to the DMU data transmitter. Pressing
the annunciator again or pressing the "push to talk" button on the
VHF communications radio switches the transmit side of the antenna
back to the voice transmitter.
Global Data Transfer Unit
If the operator chooses to use Global Flight Plan Data disks, a
Global DTU must be installed. This DTU is not the same one used
by the FMS for Jeppesen and Pilot defined data loading.

DISPLAYS
AFIS is implemented in the FMS as a feature of the flight planning
function (FPL). The AFIS menu is available as a line select key
option on the FPL page. Access is also available from the Message
page, an option which makes it more convenient to get to the AFIS
function on receipt of a message.
There are two basic functions in AFIS:
• Messaging - The creation and receipt of messages for/from
other AFIS customers or ground facilities. The messages are
passed through the ACARS data link to/from the Global Data
Center and forwarded. Messages from an aircraft must be
flight related; this is a restriction on ACARS data.
• Weather reporting - The display of weather data. AFIS can
display Terminal weather for up to five airports at a time
(including sequence reports, forecasts, NOTAMS, and
PIREPS), Winds aloft for up to five reporting locations at a
time, and SIGMETs.
AFIS Access
The AFIS MENU Page is accessed either from the MESSAGE page
or DATA 1/5 page.
NOTE: • The AFIS prompt on the MESSAGE page will be blanked
during a disk load or save operation which was initiated
from the Disk Menu page.
• The AFIS prompt will be blanked if the MESSAGE page
is accessed prior to completion of required entries on the
INITIALIZATION page.
