operations and is automatically selected at liftoff. Universal’s
LCS-850 automatically tunes the best available stations for the
current position considering geometry, field strength, SNR, error
estimates, blink, skywave, and interference. The automatic station
selection process is continuous while the LCS-850 is operating. Up
to 8 stations (non-colocated) on up to 4 GRIs are utilized in the NAV
solution to provide multi-GRI/cross chain operation. The LCS-850 is
intended to be used in the Enroute phase of flight.
The LCS-850 is for enroute navigation only and is not intended for
use during approach.
If desired, the LCS may be strapped to automatically drop out of
NAV mode upon crossing an LOA border outbound.
The minimum station tracking requirement is that at least three
stations must be tracked on one chain or two stations on each of two
chains, non-colocated.
The second line of the display shows the operational status of the
LCS. A change in status from NAV to any other status listed below
will be accompanied by a LCS NOT NAV message on the Message
page. A return to a NAV status will be accompanied by a LCS NAV
message on the Message page if the aircraft is in the defined Loran
Operating Area (LOA).

Change 1
NAV indicates the LCS is in the normal navigational mode. The LCS
is navigating with sufficient signals inside the LOA, or the LCS is
navigating outside the LOA after flying there from inside the LOA
provided continuous signal reception has been maintained since
before leaving the LOA.
FAILED indicates that the LCS failed initial self-test or an operational
failure is detected.
SEARCH indicates that the LCS is searching for sufficient stations to
navigate.
INSIDE LOA indicates that the aircraft's present position is inside a
defined LOA. This status will be reported even if no stations are
being received.
OUTSIDE LOA indicates that the aircraft's present position is
outside a defined Loran Operating Area.
The remainder of the lines displayed on the LORAN page show the
Loran C chains (GRIs) in use. Up to three GRIs may be displayed.
The GRIs are always listed in ascending numerical order.
Manual GRI selection will disable NAV mode in the LCS-850; the
mode will remain SEARCH mode until automatic station selection
mode is enabled. The LCS-850 is intended to operate in the
automatically selected station mode, in the enroute phase of flight.

Change 1
The letters after the GRI indicate which stations are in use. A capital
letter indicates the station’s tracking level is sufficient to permit the
station to used in the NAV solution. A lower case capital letter
indicates the station is merely being tracked but not incorporated in
the NAV solution due to unfavorable signal considering geometry,
field strength, variance/covariance error estimates, skywave, and
interference. Lower capital letters may also indicate the station is:
1. Transmitting a BLINK warning mode or,
2. SNR makes the signal tracking unsuitable for inclusion in the
NAV solution.
A hyphen (-) indicates that the station is not being received, and the
signal is not being tracked.
LCS-850 Sensor Deselect
1. Access the LCS Status page by pressing the DATA function key
and then selecting the [LCS] line select key.
2. Press the [DESEL LCS] line select key to deselect the LCS. The
status line will indicate NAV (D).

LCS-850 Sensor Reselect
1. Access the LCS Status page by pressing the DATA function key
and then selecting the [LCS] line select key.
2. Press the [SELECT] line select key to reselect the LCS. The
status line will indicate NAV, FAILED, NONCERT, or SEARCH.
GRI (Loran C Chain) Selection
The Loran C chains used by the LCS-850 are listed on the LCS
Status page 1/3 by their four-digit GRI (Group Repetition Interval).
The Loran C chains and associated GRIs are as follows:
