and then selecting the [LCS] line select key.
2. Use the line select keys to position the cursor over one of the
three GRI entry fields.
3. Enter the four-digit GRI for the desired chain. When the GRI is
entered, an (M) will be displayed after the GRI to indicate a
manual GRI selection.

LCS-850 Loran C Operating Areas (LOA)
Loran-C sensor software contains a "map" of the LOA within which it
is programmed to navigate. If starting a trip outside the LOA, the
LCS will enter the SEARCH mode and annunciate “OUTSIDE LOA”.
Position will be displayed but not used by the system for navigation.
Upon entry into the LOA, navigation will begin automatically.
A mix of actual flight results and employment of known conservative
signal reception range limits determined LOA boundaries. Range
limits were based upon transmitter strength and terrain type with
appropriate modifications for actual experience. As implemented in
the LCS-850, the LOA is only a "convenience warning boundary" in
software, and does not force the LCS to navigate when inadequate
signals are present. It also does not relieve the flight crew of the
responsibility of knowing when the LCS may be used for IFR
navigation and when it must be deselected.

LCS-850 Loran Page 2/3 - Status
The second LCS status page is primarily a maintenance page.
ADDRESS [2L] - This cursor position accepts a hexadecimal entry
to access the LORAN computer.
LCS DATA - This is the response from the LORAN computer to the
ADDRESS entry.
S/W VER - This is the software version number of the LORAN
computer.
A Loran Operating Area (LOA) is stored in the LCS memory. The
LORAN Status page 1/3 will indicate whether the aircraft's position is
inside or outside the stored LOA.
LCS-850 Loran Page 3/3
LCS page 3/3 displays the Loran Signal to Noise Numbers (SNN)
and interference frequencies. SNN values can range from 0-63
corresponding to Signal to Noise Ratios of -16 to 3 dB. For example,
a SNN of 63 indicates the highest level of Loran signal (3dB or
greater) relative to noise level (of 1 dB).
Interference (INTEF) frequencies indicate what frequencies the
notch filters are automatically tuned to, to filter out undesirable
Continuous Wave Interference. CWI may be due to power noise, or
other signals present near the 100 kHz band.

UNC LCS Loran C Sensor (P/N 1040)
The LCS status page displays the navigational status of the UNC
LCS (Loran C Sensor) P/N 1040. The page will not be available for
display if no LCS is installed. LCS is automatically deselected for
ground operations and is automatically selected at liftoff. Universal’s
LCS automatically tunes the master and all available secondary
stations within range in up to three Loran chains.
A 60 nm hysteresis exists on the inside of all LOA boundaries. If a
flight begins outside the LOA, the aircraft must fly 60 nm inside the
published boundary before LCS NAV made operation can
commence (provided sufficient stations are received).
If desired, the LCS may be strapped to automatically drop out of
NAV mode upon crossing an LOA border outbound.
The minimum station tracking requirement is that at least three
stations must be tracked on one chain or two stations on each of two
chains.
The second line of the display shows the operational status of the
LCS. A change in status from NAV to any other status listed below
will be accompanied by a LCS NOT NAV message on the Message
page. A return to a NAV status will be accompanied by a LCS NAV
message on the Message page if the aircraft is in a defined Loran
Operating Area (LOA).
