(5)
As the spring attempts to turn the impeller, the impeller has to impart rotation to the fuel flowing through it. As the impeller attempts to turn the fuel flow, the impeller deflects, which lets a rotational deflection between the drum and the impeller.
(6)
The drum and impeller each have two magnets installed in them on the opposite sides. As the drum and impeller turn, the magnets generate the pulse signals in the pickoff coils. The pulse signals are called stop and start pickoff signals.
(7)
The start and stop pickoff signals have a frequency that is proportional to the impeller and drum speed. The rotational deflection between the drum and impeller causes a phase lag between the stop and start pickoff signals. As the fuel flow increases, the frequency and phase lag increases.
(8)
The stop and start pickoff signals are sent to the EIU where the frequency and phase lag are translated to a fuel flow display on the auxiliary EICAS.

FUEL FLOW TRANSMITTER - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
____________________________________________
1. General
_______
A. This procedure gives the instructions to remove and install the fuel flow transmitter, M7192.
B. The fuel flow transmitter is installed at approximately the 4 o'clock position on the high pressure compressor (HPC). The fuel flow transmitter is attached to the inlet of the fuel distribution valve.
C. You can get access to the fuel flow transmitter through the right thrust reverser.
