Civil and infrastructure engineering
‘The problem-solving skills I have gained can be
applied just about anywhere. I look at the world
differently now with a real understanding of why
things run the way they do.’
Lachlan McCrae
Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure Engineering)

‘Studying civil engineering was the best way for me to work in an area I
love and make a difference to the world. I wanted to help people and
I’m a whizz with numbers so I knew it was the ideal degree for me.
RMIT was one of the few universities that offered what I was looking for
and, after looking into the ratings of the teaching staff at the University
and discovering they were the best in the state, the choice was easy.
‘I did work experience with Thiess for a month on the M1 Freeway
upgrade during its final delivery stages, which was amazing. I was
working on the Montague South Bridge and the exit ramp, only metres
away from traffic travelling from the city to the Westgate Bridge. One of
my greatest achievements was when Thiess invited me to continue my
work experience and now I’m working on the RAAF Base
Redevelopment in East Sale.
‘A highlight of my studies so far was achieving a perfect score
in the RMIT Timber Beam Competition. My friend and I spent
hours on our project and it was so rewarding to see that hard
work pay off.
‘When I finish my degree I’m heading to Europe for a month or
two before I begin full time work. I plan to visit countries that
boast the most amazing engineering feats.
‘In the future, I’d like to work on a massive tunnelling job and it
looks like there’ll be a number of opportunities in Australia over
the next few years. I’d also seriously consider working
overseas; the great thing about a civil engineering degree is
that it’s a passport to the world.’
