Surveying
‘I’ve always been interested in engineering, but I’ve never wanted to be
stuck behind a desk. I chose to study at RMIT because the surveying
degree was so hands-on, with a strong practical focus. I was attracted
to the opportunities at RMIT’s practical site at Yarra Bend and the focus
on GPS knowledge, which was rare for people in the surveying industry
at the time.
‘When I graduated, I had a real head start as I was already familiar with
fieldwork. My current role as a Licensed Land Surveyor for KLM Spatial
was a natural progression from my studies at RMIT. My work at KLM
involves subdivision and land development and I love the variety—no
two jobs are ever the same. It’s great to be able to get out and about
rather than being tied to a desk five days a week.
‘Anyone who likes working outdoors and problem solving, has a
mathematical mind, thinks outside the box and enjoys technology
would be a perfect fit for a career in surveying. Best of all, the
shortage of surveyors means it’s easy to find work while studying,
