Command in 1940 are deeply
ingrained in the public consciousness,
but the role of Bomber Command in
the Battle of Britain period remains
largely overlooked. Bomber Command
was feeling its way, torn between its
pre-war plans for the Strategic Air
Offensive, meeting the pressing needs
of defending Britain by attacking
enemy airfields and aircraft
production, and the growing invasion
fleet assembling in the Channel ports.
Incorporating first-hand accounts with
official archives, this book places the
Command’s role in its full historical
context with a detailed narrative of its
actions during this period.

No Need to Die
American flyers in
RAF Bomber Command
by Gordon Thorburn
This is the first book to be written
about a group of remarkable men who
left the wealth and comfort of America
before the Second World War to
volunteer for the most dangerous
trade in the world. While the
everlasting popularity of books and
films about Bomber Command is selfevident,
few people know there were
any Americans flying with RAF
Bomber Command. We follow the life
stories and flying careers of 21
Americans who fought in the air war
over Europe with the RAF’s two
premier Bomber Command squadrons
– 9 and 617. Of these men of free will,
15 were killed in action.

Ten Fighter Boys
by Hubert Allen DFC,
Athol Forbes DFC
foreword by Jimmy Corbin DFC
During the Battle of Britain an RAF
Spitfire squadron commander asked
some of his pilots to write about their
combat experiences. The book was
published in 1942 as Ten Fighter Boys,
penned by ten pilots on 66 Squadron,
most of whom had seen action in the
Battle of Britain and in fighter sweeps
over France in 1941-2. By the time the
book was published, three of the original
authors were dead; by the end of 1942,
only three of the ten were still alive. The
book and its narrative style are very
much of their time: the language is
colourful, irreverent and dramatic, but at
the same time filled with the pathos and
fatalism that is the preserve of the
fighter pilot.
