1. Introduction
1.1 RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum) is an airspace or route where the aircraft
are vertically separated by 1000 feet between flight level 290 & flight level 410 inclusive (Instead
of current 2000 feet vertical separation). RVSM was first implemented in North Atlantic (NAT)
region in 1997, introduced in European airspace on 24th Jan. 2002 and in South China Sea region
with effect from 21st Feb. 2002.
1.2 It was concluded in the 12th Meeting of Asia / Pacific Air Navigation Planning and
Implementation Regional Group (APANPRIG) held at Bangkok that the implementation of RVSM
in the Bay of Bengal and beyond (including Pakistan) will be combined with its implementation in
the Middle Eastern Region with effect from 27th November, 2003. This will ensure end to end
seamless operation between Asia / Middle East / Europe and South of the Himalayas.
2. Requirements
2.1 The requirements given by the regulatory bodies and different aircraft manufactures are
as follows:
2.1.1 ICAO’s Manual (Doc 9574) on implementation of a 300 m (1000 ft) vertical separation
minimum between fl 290 and fl 410 inclusive.
2.1.2 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) document 91-RVSM, interim guidance on the
approval of operator / aircraft for RVSM operations.
2.1.3 European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) temporary guidance leaflet (TGL) No.6.
2.1.4 The respective A.Ds, S.Ls, S.Bs, S.I.Ls issued by different aircraft manufacturers for
RVSM operation of their aircraft.

2.1.5 FAR and manufacturer’s requirements regarding computational data on fluid dynamics of
aircraft skin waviness etc.
3. Procedure
3.1 The RVSM Airworthiness Approval: This approval process requires following steps:-
3.1.1 Application to be submitted in local Airworthiness Field Office on form CAA-703
Appendix “A”.
3.1.2 “Certificate of Compliance” to confirm that all relevant modifications, inspections,
changes in Maintenance Planning Data (MPD), monitoring of flights and height
monitoring by Height Monitoring Unit (HMU) / GPS Monitoring Unit (GMU) have been
carried out and conforms to RVSM Standards. Moreover aircraft is equipped with
TCAS-II / ACAS-II system.
3.1.3 In case of the aircraft which requires a survey table during flight (i.e. Airbus A300 /
310). Same will be filled under observation by Airworthiness Inspector or duly
authorized person.
