and Luftwaffe aircrew, behind-thescenes
planners and strategists, and
members of the public above whose

research was indeed timely because
many of those he interviewed during
the 1970s are no longer alive.

Gladiator Ace
Bill ‘Cherry’ Vale, the RAF’s
forgotten fighter ace
by Brian Cull
Brian Cull’s careful research provides
a rare and unique insight into a
forgotten RAF fighter ace: Squadron
Leader Bill ‘Cherry’ Vale DFC, AFC
(1914–81). Vale was one of the RAF’s
top ten fighter aces of the Second
World War, but surprisingly there is no
published biography about him. He
fought the Luftwaffe and the Regia
Aeronautica in the Western Desert
and Greece in 1940, flying antiquated
Gloster Gladiator biplane fighters,
then in Crete flying Hawker
Hurricanes against the Germans, and
latterly in Egypt against Vichy French
forces in Syria. Vale’s final score was
30 kills plus three shared.

Gamp VC
The wartime story of maverick
submarine commander
Anthony Miers
by Brian Izzard
Rear Admiral Anthony Miers VC –
nicknamed ‘Gamp’ – was one of the
Royal Navy’s most controversial
submarine commanders of the Second
World War. Hot-tempered and
incautiously spoken, he was notorious
for his outbursts and those on the
receiving end often ended up with a
black eye, close-arrest or the sack – for
some it was all three. After his death in
1985, allegations were made that Miers
may have been responsible for war
crimes in the Aegean in July 1941. Was
Miers a war criminal? Author Brian Izzard
relates his colourful war career and fully
examines the war crimes allegation

The World’s Top 500 Airports
by David Wragg
Equally loved and loathed by the
public and the media, airports are
crucial to the operation of passenger
and airfreight services worldwide. The
World’s Top 500 Airports is the leading
guide on the subject. It contains a
brief history of each airport, details of
runways and terminals, annual
passenger numbers and aircraft
movements. For the ‘Top 250’ airports
there is a map, details of the main
user airlines, and details of whether
traffic is scheduled, chartered,
passenger or freight. Freight traffic
figures and ranking for freight are also
given. Data and world rankings are
supplied by the US-based Airports
Council International.

Wings Over The Desert
In action with an RFC pilot in
Palestine 1916-18
by Desmond Seward
Few people know of the battle over the
Sinai Desert between the Royal Flying
Corps and German airmen, part of
Britain’s campaign against Turkey in
the First World War. Although a smaller
conflict than the Western Front, in
some ways it was more dramatic,
involving the use of cavalry and the
Arab revolt led by T.E. Lawrence. This
fascinating book is based around the
experiences of the author’s father,
W.E.L. Seward, MC, who was a pilot
with No 14 Squadron RFC. Illustrated
