Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) recently elected its 2008 MHIA
Roundtable of Industry Leaders. The Roundtable includes the Material Handling
Industry Board of Governors and the MHIA Directors At Large. The Board of Governors
consists of the offi cers of Material Handling Industry plus the Chief Executive Offi cer
and General Counsel of the corporation. The Board of Governors serves as the Board of Directors
for Material Handling Industry.
2008-2009 Material Handling Industry Board of Governors
Colin Wilson, Chief Operating Offi cer, NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc., was elected
to the position of Executive Chairman. George W. Prest, Director of Business Development,
UNARCO Material Handling, Inc., was elected to the dual position of Executive Vice Chairman
and Chairman–Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA). E. Larry Strayhorn,
President of Diamond Phoenix Corporation was elected to the position of Vice Chair of
MHIA. Brian McNamara, President of Southworth International Group, Inc., will serve as
Last Retiring Executive Chairman.

The primary mission of the Board of Governors is the overall governance of Material Handling
Industry. The more visible external programming of the Industry takes place through Material
Handling Industry of America (MHIA). This mission is accomplished through regularly scheduled
activities of the Board, budget and fi nance, planning and standing committees.

The fi rst topic that comes up in a discussion of operations is
almost always productivity, and often the focus becomes how
to get the material handling staff to work harder. Occasionally,
we can move the focus to the benefi ts of work simplifi cation, including
how to combine or eliminate tasks, or working smarter, so that
more can be done with less effort. However, the objective is almost
always focused on the worker. And while there is a great deal that
can be done in this area, in every distribution center, there is another
powerful approach that is usually overlooked. In my experience, the
easiest and fi rst way to improve labor productivity is to look at the
