acronyms, it is assumed that all

Tips For Reading Legal Stuff
Simply take the confusing passage
and split it up into separate lines
based on where commas appear in
the text.
Medicals
Flight Crew Licences, other than
radio licences, are not valid without a
medical certificate, which is renewed
from time to time.
You may not act as flight crew if you
know or suspect that your physical
or mental condition renders you
temporarily or permanently unfit to
do so. In other words, you may not
exercise any licence privileges once
you become aware of a decrease in
your medical fitness that makes you
unable to exercise them safely.
Medicals are only valid if you meet the
initial issuing requirements. A Board of
Inquiry or insurance company may
interpret the words “medically fit” a
little differently than you think if you
fly with a cold or under the influence
of alcohol. In any case, you should
talk to a medical examiner as soon as
possible in the case of:
·  admission to a hospital or clinic
for over 12 hours
·  surgery or other invasive
procedures
·  regular use of medication
·  regular use of correcting lenses
In addition, you should inform the
CAA in writing of significant
personal injuries involving your
capacity to act as a member of a
flight crew, or illness that lasts for
more than 21 days (after the 21st
day), or pregnancy. In these cases,
your medical is suspended.
JAR
Only issued for professional and
private licences for aeroplanes and
helicopters. For Flight Engineers,
etc., refer to UK National, below.
Class 1
Although intended for professional
licences, a PPL holder may hold one
at any time. The initial issue must be
done at the CAA Medical Centre at
Gatport Airwick.
Air Law 179
Class 2
Required for the PPL. The initial
issue can be done by any aviation
medical examiner.
If your national licence does not
meet Class 2 standards, you can still
exercise the privileges of that licence.
UK National
Class 1
For Flight Engineers, Navigators,
and CPL (Airships).
Class 2
CPL (Balloons) on public transport,
with the initial one at Gatwick.
Class 3

and PPL (Airships) and (SLMG).
Initials and renewals can be done by
any aviation examiner.
Declaration of Health
An alternative to the Class 3 for
private microlights, powered
parachutes, gyroplanes or balloons.
It is signed by the PPL holder and
countersigned by any GP or AME.
Licences & Ratings
You must have a valid licence and
rating that complies with JAR-FCL
to fly as crew in a JAA-registered
aircraft. The licence itself may have
either been issued by a JAA member
state, or come from another ICAO
state, and been validated.
Having said that, within the UK, the
Channel Islands, and the Isle of
Man, you can operate radios without
a licence as the pilot of a UK
registered glider not flying for public
transport or aerial work and not
talking to ATC, or if you are being
trained in a UK registered aircraft
for flight crew duties, when
authorised by a licence holder. The
messages must only be for
