The flow control valves 11HB (8HB) are installed upstream of the air conditioning packs 10HM (11HM). These valves are of the venturi type with a nominal four-inch diameter. Both have a built-in butterfly valve that controls the flow and performs a shut-off function. The flow control valve has three main assemblies: - the valve body with its butterfly valve,

the pneumatic actuator,
-
the air pressure regulator.
The valve butterfly is controlled by a pneumatic actuator with a flexible
diaphragm (1). A return spring (2) closes the valve when there is no
pressure supply.
The pneumatic pressure regulator has:
-a pneumatic flow detector,
-
an electrical flow adjustment system,
-
an altimetric setting limiter.
The electrical flow adjustment system includes a stepper motor controlled
by the pack controller allowing the flow at 80%, 100% or 120% of its
nominal value to be adjusted.
The electrical venting system includes an electromagnetic clapper. When
it is energized, solenoid S1 ensures closure of the valve by fully
venting the pneumatic actuator "A" chamber. When the solenoid is no
longer energized, the pneumatic actuator "A" chamber is supplied with a
regulated pressure.
The microswitch actuated by a pin situated on the butterfly axis
indicates fully closed and not fully closed positions.
In case of high cabin altitude (Zc greater than 8000 feet), the
altimetric bellows placed in the nominal flow limiter, keeps flow at a
value obtained for a Zc of 8000 feet, whatever the true altitude of the
cabin (Zc).
For sudden changes in pressure upstream the pneumatic flow detector rapid
response avoids flow surges. A clapper fitted on the trailing edge probe
P3 enables to get the valve closed till a minimum pressure of 950 mbar
relative.
A pneumatic air temp. sensor at the compressor outlet of the air cycle
machine is connected to the pneumatic actuator "A" chamber. If the
temperature is too high, the pressure in chamber "A" is reduced by
venting and it is possible that the valve may be fully closed. The valve
will open again if the compressor temperature falls.
The removal of the special screw induces mechanical closure of the valve
by venting of the pneumatic actuator "A" chamber. The special screw also
allows to lock the valve closed.
The pneumatic flow sensor that uses the same principle as the main flow
pneumatic detector, in the regulation zone, modulates a flow through the
