D. Manifold Pressure Indicator
The manifold pressure indicator is part of the engine integrated display unit. A transducer attached to the manifold pressure hose senses the manifold pressure and the value is displayed in the display unit.
E. Air Intake
The air intake baffle is mounted to the alternate air valve. It is in the center of the bottom cowling and air flows from the atmosphere through the air filter and the alternate air valve to the carburetor.
F. Air Filter Assembly
The air filter is a metal framed panel with corrugated paper for the filter element. You cannot clean the air filter. If the air filter becomes dirty or damaged you must replace it.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the engine fuel and control system. It only gives you the data for the air intake and filter assembly. For more data on trouble-shooting the engine fuel and control system refer to the Lycoming Maintenance Manual. If you have the trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given in the Repair column.

Loss of engine power.  Blocked air intake. Dirty/Damaged air filter.  Examine the air intake. Remove any obstructions. Replace the air filter.

Maintenance Practices
1. General
This section tells you how to remove/Install the air filter and how to remove/install the carburetor. For more data on the engine fuel and control system refer to the Lycoming Maintenance Manual.
2. Remove/Install the Engine Air Filter
A. Remove the Engine Air Filter.

WARNING: DO NOT STAND WITHIN THE DANGER AREA OF THE PROPELLER IF THE ENGINE STARTS, THE PROPELLER CAN CAUSE DEATH OR INJURY TO PERSONS. WARNING: YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE CONTROLS. IF THE PROPELLER TURNS IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS. 
(1.)  Make sure that the engine is safe: S Set the ignition switch to OFF. S Set the throttle control to IDLE. S Set the mixture control lever to LEAN CUT-OFF. 
(2.)  Remove the engine cowlings.  Refer to Section 71-12. 
(3.)  Disconnect the airplane battery.  Refer to Section 24-31. 
(4.)  Remove the 4 bolts which attach the air filter and the front baffle to the alternate air valve housing.  Hold the air filter. 
(5.)  Pull the air filter forward and clear of the airplane.

B. Install the Engine Air Filter

(1.)  Put the air filter in position on the front baffle. 
(2.)  Align the holes of the air filter and the front baffle. 
(3.)  Tighten the 4 bolts which attach the air filter and the front baffle to the alternate air valve. 
(4.)  Connect the airplane battery.  Refer to Section 24-31 
(5.)  Install the engine cowlings.  Refer to Section 71-12. 
(6.)  Do an engine run-up.  Refer to the DA 40 F Airplane Flight Manual.
