% B. Install the Front Exhaust Pipe %
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items/References
WARNING: MAKE THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO ANY WORK ON THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. IF THE ENGINE STARTS THE PROPELLER CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Put the front exhaust pipe in position on the turbo-charger. Refer to Figure 1. Apply anti-seize compound (Loctite 8151 or equivalent) to the conical seat.
(2) Install the 3 nuts and washers that attach the flange to the turbo-charger.
(3) Install the bolt for the front bracket.
(4) Engage the rear pipe part of the spherical coupling with the ball of the front part. Apply anti-seize compound (Loctite 8151 or equivalent) to the spherical coupling.
(5) Install the 3 springs at the spherical coupling.
(6) Do a ground run-up. Look for leaks at the spherical joint and turbo-charger joint. Refer to Section 71-01.
(7) Install the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-11.

CHAPTER 79
OIL SYSTEM
% Section 79-00 % Oil System - Lycoming Engine
1. General
The IO-360-M1A installed in the DA 40 has the usual wet-sump oil system. The oil system has an oil cooler. The oil cooler attaches to brackets on the engine-mounting-frame. The oil system also has a temperature indicator. The indicator is part of the integrated-engine-instrument-display. For more data about the indication system refer to Section 77-40.
For more data on the oil system refer to the Lycoming Maintenance Manual.
2. Description/Operation
Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram for the oil system.
Oil is stored in the engine sump. Oil goes into the oil pump through an internal oil-way in the sump. The inlet to the oil-way has a strainer. The outlet of the oil pump flows to the thermostatic oil by-pass valve. When the oil is at normal operating temperature oil will flow through a flexible hose to the oil cooler. When the oil is cold the thermostatic by-pass valve sends the oil directly to the oil filter.
The oil filter has a by-pass valve. The by-pass valve is normally closed. If the oil filter becomes blocked the by-pass valve will open and oil will flow to the pressure regulating valve. From the oil pressure regulating valve the oil flows around the engine and back to the sump.
