Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the oil system. If you have the trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given in the Repair column.
Trouble Possible Cause Repair
Engine oil temperature too high. Air inlet/flexible hoses to oil cooler blocked. Oil cooler matrix dirty/blocked. Oil cooler blocked internally. Remove obstruction. Clean oil cooler matrix. Remove oil cooler and flush with clean engine oil. Replace oil cooler.

Maintenance Practices
1. General
These maintenance practices tell you how to remove/install the oil cooler. For more data on the oil system refer to the Lycoming Maintenance Manual.
2. Remove/Install the Oil Cooler
WARNING: DO NOT GET OIL ON YOU. OIL CAN CAUSE SKIN DISEASE.
CAUTION: ALWAYS PUT A CAP ON OPEN CONNECTIONS. IF YOU DO NOT PUT A CAP ON OPEN CONNECTIONS, THEN CONTAMINATION CAN GET INTO THE SYSTEM AND CAUSE DAMAGE.
CAUTION: DO NOT MIX OIL TYPES. IF YOU MIX OIL TYPES THE OIL CAN LOSE
ITS PROPERTIES AND THE ENGINE WILL WEAR MORE QUICKLY.
A. Remove the Oil Cooler

WARNING: MAKE THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO ANY WORK ON THE OIL SYSTEM. IF THE ENGINE STARTS THE PROPELLER CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Make sure that the engine is safe: S The ignition switch is set to OFF. S The ALT/BAT switch is set to OFF. S The throttle is set to IDLE. S The mixture control is set to LEAN CUT-OFF.
(2) Remove the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-10.
(3) Release the flexible hose from the connection at the inboard end of the oil cooler. Use a suitable container to catch the oil. Put caps on the open connections.
(4) Release the flexible hose from the connection at the outboard end of the oil cooler. Use a suitable container to catch the oil. Put caps on the open connections.

(5) Remove the oil cooler: S Release the nut, washer and bolt which attach the bottom of the oil cooler to the engine-mounting-frame. S Release the nuts, washers and bolts which attach the top of the oil cooler to the engine-mounting-frame. S Move the oil cooler clear of the airplane. Hold the oil cooler!
B. Install the Oil Cooler

(1) Put the oil cooler in position in the airplane.
(2) Install the bolts, washers and nuts which attach the oil cooler to the engine-mounting-frame.
(3) Connect the flexible hose to the connection at the inboard end of the oil cooler. Remove the blanking caps.
(4) Connect the flexible hose to the connection at the outboard end of the oil cooler. Remove the blanking caps.
(5) Install the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-10.
(6) Fill the engine with oil to the correct level. Refer to Section 12-10.
(7) Do an engine ground run-up. Monitor the oil temperature. Look specially for oil leaks. The oil temperature indicator must show the relevant oil temperature. Refer to the DA 40 Airplane Flight Manual.
