Air Intakes - Lycoming IO-360-A4M Engine
1. General
A front baffle, an alternate air valve assembly, air filter housing and air filter make the engine air intake system for the DA 40 F airplane. The engine bottom cowling has a molded air intake duct and a flexible seal attached to the front baffle makes the joint between the engine bottom cowling and the engine intake front baffle. Figure 1 shows the front baffle, engine air filter and alternate air valve assembly.
2. Description
The air intake has 3 main parts:
) Alternate air valve assembly.
) Engine Intake Front Baffle.
) Air filter.
A. Alternate Air Valve Assembly
The alternate air valve assembly has a valve body with an air intake at the front, an alternate air intake on the right side and the carburetor outlet on top . A Bowden cable attaches to a bracket on the valve body and rotates the flap inside the valve via a lever arm.
The alternate air intake shroud is attached to the valve body by a worm- drive clamp.
B. Engine Intake Front Baffle
The front baffle has a flexible seal which makes a seal between the air intake assembly and the engine bottom cowling. Oil cooler hose and alternator cooling hoses are attached to the front baffle by worm-drive clamps.
C. Air Filter
The air filter panel is attached to the front side of the engine intake front baffle and the alternate air valve assembly with 4 bolts.

3. Operation
Figure 2 shows the alternate air control lever in the cockpit. It is located on the left side of the center console under the instrument panel. A Bowden control cable connects the control lever in the cockpit to the alternate air valve assembly in the engine bay.
In normal operation the alternate air control lever is set to the OFF position. The flap in the alternate air valve body guides ambient air to the carburetor.
When the alternate air control lever in the cockpit is moved to the alternate air position, the Bowden cable turns the valve flap via the lever. Warm air from the engine bay will now flow through the alternate air valve into the carburetor .
The alternate air valve can be selected to the alternate air position to supply warm air for anti-icing or to maintain the air supply should the air filter become blocked. The alternate air supply is not filtered.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the air intake system. If you have the trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given in the Repair column.
Trouble Possible Cause Repair
Engine does not develop full power. Air filter blocked/defective. Alternate air valve not closed. Alternate air control incorrectly set. Alternate air control cable broken. Replace air filter. Set alternate air control to OFF. Do a test of the alternate air control adjustment. Adjust the alternate air control. Replace alternate air control cable.
