Section 73-02
Engine Fuel and Control - Lycoming O-360-A4M Engine
1. General
This Section tells you about the fuel system on the Lycoming O-360-A4M engine. It gives you general data on the system and the trouble-shooting data on the system. Refer to the Lycoming Maintenance Manual for more data on the engine fuel system
Refer to Section 28-00 for more data on the airplane fuel system and refer to Section 76-00 for more data on the controls which connect to the engine fuel system. Section 77-40 tells you more about the engine integrated display system. 2. Description/Operation
Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram for the DA 40 F. The engine fuel system has these components:
A. Carburetor
The carburetor and the engine controls bracket are attached to the inlet manifold of the engine with studs, washers, serrated washers and nuts. Air flows through the alternate air valve and the carburetor to the inlet manifold. A throttle valve in the body of the carburetor controls the air flow.
The fuel goes into the carburetor under pressure. The fuel flows through the fuel inlet strainer to the manual mixture control valve. The fuel flows from the manual mixture control valve to the main jet, the idle jet and the accelerator pump. The carburetor body has an outer venturi and a main venturi. When air flows through a venturi, the air speed increases. Due to this effect the fuel is vaporized by the main jet in the main venturi and by the accelerator jet and idle jet in the outer venturi.
The mixture control lever in the cockpit is attached to the mixture control lever on the carburetor with a Bowden cable and controls the mixture valve. The throttle lever in the cockpit controls the throttle valve in the carburetor.
The carburetor has 3 adjustments:
) Idle speed. The idle RPM can be adjusted with the Stop screw on the throttle lever.
) Idle mixture. The idle mixture adjustment screw is next to the mixture control lever.
) Acceleration pump.

B. Fuel Flow Indicator
The fuel flow indicator is part of the engine integrated display unit. A transducer in the engine fuel system senses the fuel flow and the value is displayed in the display unit.
C. Fuel Pressure Indicator
The fuel pressure indicator is part of the engine integrated display unit. A transducer in the engine fuel system senses the fuel pressure and the value is displayed in the display unit. The transducer operates a warning light in the central warning panel when the fuel pressure drops below the minimum permissible pressure.
