(6)  Set the alternate air control lever in the cockpit to OFF and hold it in position: S Make sure that the alternate air valve is fully closed and that the swivel fitting contacts the end of the cut-out in the alternate air flanged housing.  With the alternate air valve fully closed there must be at least 3 mm (0.125 in) clearance (bounce) between the alternate air control lever and the stop bush. Figure 2. 
(7)  Set the alternate air control lever in the cockpit to ON and hold it in position: S Make sure that the alternate air control valve is in the fully open position and that the 2 rows of holes in the valve align.

(8)  If the adjustment of the control is not correct then you must adjust the 2 adjusting nuts at the alternate air control lever in the cockpit. 
(9)  Do items 5 - 8 again as necessary to get the correct settings. 
(10)  Do an inspection of the control connections which you disconnected. If necessary for your airworthiness authority, do a second inspection of the controls. 
(11)  Install the cables to the spark plugs.  Torque to 12.4 - 13.6 Nm (110 - 120 in.lb). 
(12)  Connect the airplane battery.  Refer to Section 24-31. 
(13)  Install the engine cowlings.  Refer to Section 71-12. 
(14)  Do an engine run-up.  Refer to the DA 40 F Airplane Flight Manual.

Section 71-72
Engine Drains - Lycoming O-360-A4M Engine

1. General
The O-360-A4M engine installed in the DA 40F has one engine drain for the engine-driven fuel-pump.
2. Description
A clear tube makes the fuel drain for the engine driven fuel pump. The fuel pump is mounted on the rear accessory housing. The tube attaches to a pipe connector at the rear of the pump. Cable ties attach the tube to the engine breather pipe. The drain connects to the main drain tube assembly at the rear of the engine compartment.
Refer to the Lycoming Operator's Manual for more data on the engine drain.
3. Operation
The fuel pump drain is connected to the fuel pump above the diaphragm. If the diaphragm ruptures, fuel will flow from the fuel pump drain outlet.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the engine drains. If you have the trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given in the Repair column.

WARNING: YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE DRAINS. MAKE SURE THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH IS SET TO “OFF”. SET THE THROTTLE TO “IDLE” AND THE MIXTURE CONTROL TO “LEAN CUT-OFF”. 
(1)  Remove the cowling from the top of the engine.  Refer to Section 71-12.
