(5)  Do a test of engine static RPM: S Set the throttle control to FULL. S Set the throttle to IDLE.  Note the engine RPM. It must reach a minimum of 2200 RPM, depending on environmental factors, e.g. Temperature, ambient air pressure and in particular head- or tailwind components. Headwind will cause a higher RPM than tailwind. 
Note: Operate the engine at up to 2000 RPM for 20 to 30 seconds before each measurement. This will allow the engine to stabilize between measurements.

(6)  Measure the idle RPM. S Make sure that the oil temperature is at least 175 °F. If it is not, operate the engine at up to 2000 RPM until the oil temperature is 175 °F. S Make sure that the mixture control lever is set to full RICH. S Set the throttle to IDLE. Make a note of the idle RPM.  Low oil temperature can change the idle RPM. Fully forward. Allow the RPM to become stable. See Paragraph 6.B for the idle RPM adjustment procedure. 
Note: Operate the engine at up to 2000 RPM for 20 to 30 seconds before each measurement. This will allow the engine to stabilize between measurements.(7) 
(7)  Measure the idle control mixture setting: S Make sure that the oil temperature is at least 175 °F. If it is not, operate the engine at up to 2000 RPM until the oil temperature is 175 °F. S Make sure that the mixture control lever is set to full RICH. S Set the throttle to IDLE. S Move the mixture control lever smoothly towards the LEAN position. S Move the mixture control lever to the full RICH position before the engine stops.  Fully forward. Allow the idle RPM to become stable. If the idle RPM increases by more than 50 RPM before decreasing then the mixture is too rich. If the idle RPM decreases immediately, then the mixture is too lean. See Paragraph 6.C for the idle mixture adjustment. 
(8)  Do a test of the function of the fuel selector/shut-off valve: S Set the engine to 1000 - 1200 RPM. S Set the fuel shut-off valve to OFF. S Set the fuel shut-off valve to ON. S Set the ignition to OFF.  The engine must stop within 2 minutes. 
(9)  Start the engine.  Refer to Paragraph 7. 


B. Adjust the Engine Idle Speed

Note: Do this work quickly. If the oil temperature is less than 175 °F, it can change the idle RPM. 
(1)  Shut down the engine.  Refer to Paragraph 9. 
(2)  Remove the engine cowlings.  Refer to Section 71-12. 
(3)  Set the throttle lever to IDLE.  Make sure that the throttle lever at the carburetor is against the throttle stop screw. If the throttle lever at the carburetor is NOT against the idle stop screw, adjust the throttle control, see Section 76-02. 
(4)  Start the engine.  Refer to Paragraph 7. 
(5)  Set the mixture control to full RICH. 
(6)  Operate the engine at 1500 RPM until it runs smoothly.  Obey the operating limits in the Lycoming Operator's Manual. 
(7)  Set the throttle to IDLE.  Allow the idle RPM to become stable. 
(8)  Make a note of the difference in idle RPM with the engine cowlings removed.
