When reverse thrust is selected in the flight compartment, hydraulic flow goes from the applicable left or right main hydraulic system via isolation valve, directional control valve and flow control tees as described in Thrust Reverser Control System (AMM 78-34-00/001). Hydraulic flow is first directed to the locking mechanism on the center hydraulic actuators. When the locks have disengaged, hydraulic flow is directed to the hydraulic actuators. The hydraulic actuators extend, which moves the translating sleeve to the reverse thrust position. As the translating sleeves move, blocker doors are turned by the door links into the fan exhaust flow path. Aft movement of the translating sleeves show the cascade vanes to the fan exhaust.

Retraction

 (1)  
When forward thrust is selected, the directional control valve routes hydraulic flow to the rod ends of the hydraulic actuator. The hydraulic actuators retract, which moves the translating sleeves to the forward thrust (cruise) position. As the translating sleeves move forward, cascade vanes are moved in the cavity in the translating sleeves and blocker doors are turned out of the fan exhaust flow path.

Open and Close the Thrust Reverser - Hand Pump Method

 (1)  
Attach the hand pump to the applicable quick-release-manifold installed on the torque box of the therust reverser below the left and right fan cowl panels. When the hand pump is operated, it moves fluid to the opening actuator, which lifts the thrust reverser. Use the hold open rod when the reverser is open to the necessary position.

 (2)  
It is not recommended to close the two thrust reversers at the same time.

 (3)  
When you close the thrust reverser, use the hand pump to remove the force on the hold open rod. Disconnect the rod and put it back in its usual position. Open the return valve on the hand pump to let the hydraulic fluid back into the pump reservoir. The weight of the reverser will cause it to close.
