E. Adjust the Tension Latches (Fig. 501).
NOTE: Start from the forward tension latch and go to the aft tension latch. On the forward tension latch, you can adjust the length of the eyebolt with the starwheel in the keeper body. You cannot adjust the length of the latch hook. On the three aft tension latches, you can adjust the length of the latch hook with the adjustment wheel or adjustment nut.
S 825-030-N00
(1) To adjust the forward tension latch, do the steps that follow:
(a) Examine the forward tension latch and the eyebolt for damage (make sure they are not loose).
NOTE: The eyebolt moves into or out of the keeper body when
____ you turn the starwheel. An eyebolt that turns in the keeper body shows that the guide pin on the keeper body is broken. This causes the adjustment of the tension latch to be unsatisfactory, and will cause the tension latch to latch incorrectly.
(b)
Replace the tension latch that is broken or is damaged (AMM 78-31-04/401).
CAUTION:_______DO NOT TURN THE EYEBOLT. IF YOU TURN THE EYEBOLT, IT WILL BREAK THE GUIDE PIN ON THE KEEPER BODY. THIS CAUSES THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE TENSION LATCH TO BE UNSATISFACTORY, AND WILL CAUSE THE TENSION LATCH TO LATCH INCORRECTLY.
(c)
Turn the starwheel in the keeper body with the allen wrench to adjust the eyebolt to the specified closing force.
(d)
Use the spring scale to make sure the closing force for the latch is 40 - 60 pounds (178 - 267 Newtons).
(e)
After each adjustment, make sure the tension latch fully engages the eyebolt with the specified closing force.
NOTE: The tension latches that are correctly adjusted will
____
open with a noise.
S 825-013-N00
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE LATCH HANDLE, WHEN UNLATCHED, DOES NOT ENGAGE THE
_______ RIVETS ON THE LOUVERED EXHAUST DOOR HINGE. IF THE LATCH HANDLE DOES ENGAGE THE RIVETS ON THE HINGE, POSSIBLE DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO THE LATCH OR TO THE DOOR.
(2) To adjust the three aft tensions latches, do the steps that follow:
(a) Examine the three aft tension latches for damage.

(b)
Replace the tension latches that are damaged
(AMM 78-31-04/401).
(c)
Use the spring scale to make sure the closing force for each latch is 40 - 60 pounds (178 - 267 Newtons).
(d)
If the force to close the latch is NOT 40 - 60 pounds, do the following: 1) FOR THE LATCH WITH A KNURLED ADJUSTMENT WHEEL;
Turn the knurled adjustment wheel (1) on the latch hook (2) with the allen wrench to set the specified closing force.
2) FOR THE LATCH WITH A 5/8 INCH ADJUSTMENT NUT; Move the retaining spring (5) in on the latch hook (4) to release the adjustment nut (3). a) Turn the adjustment nut (3) with a 5/8 inch wrench (6)
to set the specified closing force.
b) When the adjustment is completed, move the retaining spring (5) outward on the latch hook (4) to lock the adjustment nut (3).
(e) After each adjustment, make sure the tension latch fully engages the eyebolt with the specified closing force.
NOTE: The tension latches which are correctly adjusted will
____
open with a noise.
S 415-031-N00
(3)
Start at the forward tension latch and move rearward to engage all
of the tension latches.
S 215-016-N00
(4)
Make sure there is no clearance between the bumper pads at each of
the tension latch locations.
NOTE: If there is clearance, it can cause the latch tension to
____ decrease because of the thermal expansion, vibration, or related motion.
F. Put the Airplane Back to Its Usual Condition.

(1)
