________________________________________________HEAT SHRINK CONDUITS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_______1. General
This chapter gives the description and procedures for the installation of
R heat shrinkable sleeves when they are used for the protection of wire
R harnesses. As a general rule, heat shrinkable sleeves are conduits used for
R mechanical protection inside fuel vapor areas or to seal harnesses, but this
R depends on the types of heat shrinkable sleeves and the areas. For more
information refer to chapter 20-33-30 (Conduit selection paragraph).
R Heat shrinkable sleeves for the protection of wire harnesses are divided
R into two sub-families and have the codes that follow:
- Shrinkable sleeves:
ABS0836
ABS0916
E0126 (ex NSA937211)
DAN132
NSA937210
NSA937493
NSA937502
- Shrinkable mouldings:
ABS0266
ABS0312
E0056
R E0096 (ex NSA939512)
R DAN218
DAN299
DAN301
DAN302

R R A. General Shrinkable sleeves are used for the protection of harnesses in: - Raceways when the installation is not aligned or when there is a gap between two raceways of more than 6 mm (0.2362 in.). - At the end of a convoluted or braided conduit.
R R ____NOTE : For the description and characteristics of shrinkable sleeves, refer to chapter 20-42-12.
R R R R R This type of sleeve is also used: - For the protection of the terminal (refer to chapter 20-48-1X). - For the protection of the connector cavities at the rear of the contact (refer to chapter 20-48-2X). - To repair the wires in some cases (refer to chapter 20-53-2X).
R R R R R B. Procedure (Ref. Fig. 001) - Select the applicable shrinkable sleeves. - Cut to the correct length (if not delivered to the correct length). Make sure that the cutting edges are smooth to prevent rupture of the sleeve during shrinking. - Install the sleeve on the harness. - Select the applicable shrinking tool. - Install the applicable reflector on the shrinking tool according to the dimensions of the part to be shrunk. - Shrink the sleeve: With short sleeves, start in the middle of the sleeve and move continuously to the two ends. For longer sleeves or if a specified position at one end is necessary, start shrinking at the specified end and move continuously to the other end.
R R ____NOTE : During shrinking, turn the sleeve in the heat flow, if possible, to get equal distribution of temperature.
R R - Do not let the harness touch the reflector during shrinking. - Shrinking is completed when the form and contour are flush.
R R R ____NOTE : PTFE shrinkable sleeves must be removed from the heating source before shrinking is completed, as residual shrinking occurs during the cool phase.

R ____________________3. Shrinkable mouldings
R
A. General
R Shrinkable mouldings are used for the protection of harnesses when they
R must be waterproof or dustproof.
R They are used as moulded backshell at the rear of the connectors or as
R harness separators when the main bundle is protected.
R
B. Procedure
(Ref. Fig. 002)
R (1) Moulded backshell (ABS0266, E0096, DAN218 and DAN299)
R - Select the applicable shrinkable mouldings and the correct size.
R ____NOTE : To increase the strength, it is possible to add bonding of
R moulding with adhesive sealant, or use moulding coated on
