shopping.
If you leave it late, you have afternoon turbulence and heat to confront and
may add stress through pressure of last light. Note in the picture how difficult
it might be to see a runway below the setting sun brilliance. And you may well
be tired.

The Route
!
Note the aerodrome centre of picture. Late afternoon, dusty conditions, dirty
windscreen make it impossible to see other circuit traffic and even difficult on
finals.
Plan your route to allow for such contingencies.

The Route
Plan early departures
Arrive at least 30 minutes before last light
Choice of aircraft
Choose the aircraft well.
Cost $2,800 $2,800
Time 15 hours 12 hours
Total distance 1,800 nms 1,800 nms
Endurance 4 hours 7 hours
Fuel 110 kgs 310 kgs
Baggage 60 kgs 60 kgs
Pilot + 2 pax 230 kgs 230 kgs
Useful load 400 kgs 600 kgs
Seats 4 6
Aircraft PA 28 Arrow PA 32 Saratoga
Aircraft Choice
Cheapest not always best. These are approximate planning figures and are for
illustration only.
Note that the Saratoga allows more rom (3 people in both, but 6 seats versus
4), more useful load, more fuel and endurance (safety factors) but because it
does it all quicker the overall cost is the same.
I used $180 an hour Arrow, $230 an hour Saratoga.

What is the best time of the year to go where you want?
The Route
!
About 3.8% of Australia is deliberately burnt every year. 90% of that is
northern Australia in the dry (29 million hectares). It is possible to be IFR in
the smoke. Even if you can see the ground, it may not be enough to navigate
by. Unfortunately, the dry is the best time to visit the Top End.

Roll cloud passing over central Australia near dawn. Around 800 to 1,000 feet
AGL and travelling at about 25 knots. Nasty to fly into, particularly on take
off or landing.

Top End thunderstorms are relatively easy to fly around. Reach maturity
usually mid to late afternoon, so beware if you plan to arrive Darwin 4pm
during the wet season.
Imbedded cold front thunderstorms down south can be far more dangerous
because you may not see them

Where do you want to overnight/where must
you overnight? Is restful accommodation
available?
You may wish to stay at an ALA near a camping site. But fuel is not available.
Need to consider these things.
Accommodation
Good rest important -
plan to be tired at end of each day
Accommodation is important because if you do it all correctly you will be
justifiably tired at the end of each day.

Accommodation
Good rest important -
plan to be tired at end of each day
Check accommodation available and suitable
Insect repellent
Check before you depart that suitable accommodation is available and book it.
You might need to consider insect repellent and ear plugs.

Accommodation
!
Don’t make your first night in a tent on the trip unless you are very familiar
with sleeping out.
Think of drunks at 2 am in the gutter finishing off their party. Perhaps your
room is the one with the air conditioner in the window which makes more
noise than a B747. Ask others where they stay, charter pilots, Flying Doctor.

If it’s a couple of weeks you plan, allow a few nights in a top spot. Let your
hair down one night, catch up with the washing the next.

Early starts and late finishes - flying into sun.

What aerodromes are available?
The charts will tell you what suitable aerodromes are available along your
proposed route.
ALAs

Aerodromes - ALAs - are the subject of a separate presentation.
