The Outback
Beautiful - Dangerous
It’s a beautiful continent. Flying is the best way to see much of it. We get to
enjoy both Australia and flying at once.
This presentation is prepared from my own experiences, from discussions
with other pilots (both CASA and industry) and from comments made by
pilots while presenting the program in many parts of Australia.

The Outback - what does that mean to you?
Remote from what?
- Learn to fly at Alice - Adelaide is remote
- Learn to fly at Camden - Urdry Creek is remote
The Macquarie Concise dictionary edition 2 reprinted 1994 includes in its
definition of ‘outback’ the description ‘remote’.
Remote from what? Depends on your view. A person born and bred in the
Tanami Desert could consider Sydney to be remote.
Interestingly, Urdry Creek is pronounced ‘you-are-dry creek’.

Danger Country!
Perhaps you are tempted off the coast a mile or so, down a bit low, to look at
the water and its content. Be aware of the dangers if the engine decides to stop
at that point. Can you and your passengers swim that far? What nasties are
lurking below the surface?
I had a crocodile leap from the water and try to grab a helicopter I was
hovering over its nest.

Aussie tiger country
I had one of these charge me while the helicopter was on the ground in a
clearing with rotors turning.
This is the Top End in the wet. Six months later, it is dry and dusty. This
makes a big difference for navigation purposes.

Early Planning
!
Preparation key to good flight
Reason for flight
Most accident chains start before the pilot gets near the aircraft. Do as much
as possible before the flight.
The reason for your flight is important. If it’s a business trip, you probably
want to get there and back as quickly as possible. If its mates on a fishing
safari, you might want to get to the area quickly but spend some time trying
different places. If it’s a family holiday to see this beautiful country of ours,
you want to plan through areas of interest.
Reason
!
What do you want to see/achieve on journey?
Ask the passengers what they want to see, where they want to go. This avoids
possible stress on the flight with last minute changes and upsets.

Convivial nights with pax to talk expectations
Obtain current charts and docs - study them
Start planning 2 weeks before
You might only need a day or so to plan. But if its across half the country for
the first time, you might want to start planning a month before. Give yourself
planning time to ensure you cover as much as possible.
Have the passengers around for a BBQ and discuss their expectations. It
would be a shame to arrive in Tamworth when a Country and Western fan
passenger just realises it is the home of the Big Guitar and wants an extra
couple of hours on the ground. This may give the pilot stress due to possible
weather or last light concerns at the day’s final destination or setting the
whole trip back, affecting accommodation and other arrangements.
The pilot in command is required to have current charts.
Every 6 months there may be many changes to a WAC chart.
For example, look at Canberra and all its changes. You might confuse
Gundaroo with Goulburn, for example, as the Gundaroo unlicensed
aerodrome is suitable for turbine operations.
Do you subscribe to AIP amendments?
Even runways change. Note runway 05 in 1999 became runway 04 in 2002.

Speak with someone who has done it
Speak to someone who has done what you plan to do. Why did they do it the
way they did? What worked and did not work?
Alternatively, speak with someone who has done something similar. At least,
speak to an experienced instructor.
The Route
Plan early departures
Arrive at least 30 minutes before last light
Planning the route to fly.
Perhaps you don’t like early starts. But once you get airborne on a cool, clear
morning, the aeroplane performs well, the air is smooth and you get to the
other end with plenty of time to bed the aeroplane down and do a little
